Hotel at a Glance: The Omni Homestead Resort

Since it first opened in 1766, The Omni Homestead Resort has enjoyed a reputation as one of the country’s most luxurious resorts, with a prestigious guest book that includes more than 20 US presidents. Golfing legend Sam Snead honed his game on the onsite Cascades Course, and the Rockefellers and Vanderbilts once strolled the grand halls and gaming lawns. Today the Homestead—set on 2,300 acres in the Allegheny Mountains—is as grand as ever. An outdoor water park was recently added to the property, and from 2011 to 2014, the resort was named one of the world’s best by Travel + Leisure magazine, which called it “the uncontested grande dame of the Allegheny Mountains.”

The AAA Four Diamond resort’s popularity has always been influenced by its proximity to natural mineral springs. Take a soak in the healing waters that Thomas Jefferson claimed to be “of the first merit” at the Jefferson Pools, where the mineral content is so high you’ll float with ease. Other presidents, including William Howard Taft and Dwight D. Eisenhower, favored the resort’s golf courses. Play a round on the Old Course, which dates back to 1892 and boasts the oldest first tee in continuous use in the nation.

The property’s mountainous environs make it an ideal base for outdoor recreation. Catch a glimpse of waterfalls on a guided hike along the Cascades Gorge trail, or paddle down the Jackson River in a canoe or kayak.

The onsite restaurants and bars include Jefferson’s Restaurant and Bar and the sophisticated Main Dining Room. At night, you’ll retire to a guest room or suite decorated in a traditional Virginian style.

Bath County, Virginia: Warm Mineral Springs amid Allegheny Mountains

Bath County—a highlands region in western Virginia—is so named for its wealth of natural thermal springs that can reach temperatures upward of 100 degrees. Since the early 1700s, visitors such as George Washington have traveled to Bath County for a relaxing soak said to promote mental and physical well-being.

This area is also known for its unspoiled scenery. Spend an afternoon hiking the trails that wend through forests next to freshwater streams. Or hop in your car for a scenic drive on country roads that crest over the Allegheny Mountains.

Bath County supports a prolific arts community. At the Garth Newel Music Center, you can enjoy an intimate concert followed by a gourmet meal with the musicians. The center also hosts festivals and champagne brunches throughout the year.

Beautiful resort, unkempt hallways My husband and I spent a night after dropping our son off at camp. The property is beautiful, and the location is gorgeous. We were surprised by the piles of sheets and room service dishes that we had to navigate around in the hallways, not just once, but every time we made our way to and from our room. We spent the afternoon at the serenity pools and I enjoyed the thermal therapy. My husband said that half the features weren’t working on the men’s side, and we were disappointed with the lack of service for that area as we were needing a snack but didn’t want to leave. The landscaping in that area also didn’t look as well kept as the rest of the resort. We enjoyed the most delicious dinner at the Jefferson, but our poor waiter had too many tables and no help from his assistant. We waited twenty minutes to even get water. The assistant only came to remove plates or refill water when he had her come with him to our table. It generally felt like the service staff just needed training, and we are sympathetic that this is a huge issue across the industry, but it was disappointing considering we spent close to $1,000 on a one night getaway after an upgraded patio room, spa, drinks and dinner.

The Omni Homestead Exceeded All Expectations on our 30th Wedding Anniversary! What a tremendous stay my wife Amy and I enjoyed at the Omni Homestead in Hot Springs, VA for our 30th wedding anniversary. The whole experience exceeded our expectations! We were impressed by everyone who served us--from the new employee who checked us in to Dave the bellman who helped us move out and told us so many great stories about the homes surrounding the resort. Unfortunately we can't remember everyone's name, but we'd like to say how much we appreciated the professionalism and good cheer of all those who served us in the Audobon Restaurant, with a special shout out to FERNANDO, a young man from Guatemala, who was unfailingly polite, good-humored, deft in his serving duties, and friendly over the course of the two meals (one our 30th anniversary dinner) and afternoon tea that he served us. We would be overjoyed to hear that he received special commendation for his excellent service. VICTOR was great, too, in the one breakfast he served us. And COOPER was a fabulous Gorge Hike guide! The luxurious afternoons we spent in the Serenity Garden and in the Lazy River will carry us through to our next visit at the Omni Homestead.

Another wonderful stay at The Homestead I've just returned from another stay at the Homestead. The hotel went through major renovations over the past several years and what an improvement. It looks beautiful! The refreshed rooms are more relaxing too. The amenities and activities are top notch.
