Newport, Rhode Island: Harbor Town with World-Famous Mansions

Newport sits on Rhode Island’s Aquidneck Island, just 30 miles south of Providence and 70 miles south of Boston. With its picturesque cliffs running along the rocky coast, Newport understandably attracted America’s upper class at the turn of the 20th century. The prestigious Astor and Vanderbilt families joined other captains of industry in building their summer “cottages” here—sprawling estates that epitomized the Gilded Age’s glitz and glamour. You can sign up for mansion tours at the historic The Elms, Marble House, and The Breakers, a 70-room Italian Renaissance–style palazzo commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt II in 1893 and inspired by the palaces of Genoa and Turin.

Year-round, the Cliff Walk is one of the most popular activities in town. From sunrise to sunset, you’ll find visitors strolling the 3.5-mile path, ensconced between the beautiful Newport shoreline and the spectacular mansions. If the conditions are ripe, you might see surfers catching waves on the ocean breakers. The ocean is easily accessible from Newport’s western, eastern, and southern coastlines. It’s often referred to as “the Sailing Capital of the World,” and in the summertime, fishing boats fill its harbors and beachgoers flock to its shores.

Overall, very nice. However, there was a problem with the TV service. Only about half the listed channels were available.

Acoustical Renovation Necessary-Noise City The Pell is a bright, fresh design focussed hotel with pleasant staff. The dining room staff is professional and goes out of their way, particularly Dan at Breakfast to make your experience fabulous. Unfortunately the Pell suffers from poor construction; acoustics lack proper panels/installation and the noise is very difficult to deal with. Smokers who were adults in large groups drank and smoked late at night while their kids from toddlers through elementary school ran the halls and stairwells making it unbearable to sleep. The location great away from the congestion and commercial area and style inviting but the incredible noise was unbearable. Our room was changed on Night 2 and prior to dinner we went back to our new room only to have to listen to our neighbors loudly having sex. Also, while we were fine carrying our luggage up the 3 flights of stairs; some may find that challenging; pack light - 3 floors no elevators.

Good lodging choice Overall we had a pleasant stay. Was a good value as it was conveniently located for quick access to Newport sites therefore didn't have to pay premium associated with Newport lodging.

Delightful stay In Middletown, RI This was my second stay at The Pell. The staff was welcoming and helpful. My room was spacious, quiet and immaculate. The Nespresso machine was a nice touch for morning coffee. Breakfast and dinner at the Helmway was delicious. Plus, I was given a $15.00 credit when I checked in that could be used toward a meal in the restaurant. Would definitely stay here again.
