Newport, Rhode Island: Harbor Town with World-Famous Mansions

Newport sits on Rhode Island’s Aquidneck Island, just 30 miles south of Providence and 70 miles south of Boston. With its picturesque cliffs running along the rocky coast, Newport understandably attracted America’s upper class at the turn of the 20th century. The prestigious Astor and Vanderbilt families joined other captains of industry in building their summer “cottages” here—sprawling estates that epitomized the Gilded Age’s glitz and glamour. You can sign up for mansion tours at the historic The Elms, Marble House, and The Breakers, a 70-room Italian Renaissance–style palazzo commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt II in 1893 and inspired by the palaces of Genoa and Turin.

Year-round, the Cliff Walk is one of the most popular activities in town. From sunrise to sunset, you’ll find visitors strolling the 3.5-mile path, ensconced between the beautiful Newport shoreline and the spectacular mansions. If the conditions are ripe, you might see surfers catching waves on the ocean breakers. The ocean is easily accessible from Newport’s western, eastern, and southern coastlines. It’s often referred to as “the Sailing Capital of the World,” and in the summertime, fishing boats fill its harbors and beachgoers flock to its shores.

Overall, very nice. However, there was a problem with the TV service. Only about half the listed channels were available.

Will stay again Very well renovated, nice bar, helpful staff. Layout is great, rooms are big. Morning breakfast was good. I would request a quiet room because there is not a lot of sound proofing

Nice, Clean Hotel This is a very nice hotel; however, I was not aware that there is no elevator and was given the one and only 4th-floor room. It was a lovely room with plenty of light, especially when the sun came up. One of the landscape-shaped windows faces east, so the shorter room-darkening curtains didn't do the trick. I was also a bit uncomfortable with the lack of an extra bolt lock for the door. I'm guessing that's because the door opened outward from inside, so maybe that type of lock can't be used on that type of door. Overall, it was a nice place to stay. I'd recommend it if you're visiting Newport and don't mind climbing stairs.

Wonderful long weekend spent! We came here as a group of 3 and I must say, it's great! We chose this hotel purely because of it's affordability compared to the hotels in Newport and I do prefer Hyatt. It was so close to Newport (8 minute drive) that it wasn't worth paying more to stay in Newport. Everything that we wanted to see was close by -- the vineyards, Newport mansions, various restaurants, etc. The rooms were exactly as pictured. Not misleading in any way. Clean and spacious. The aesthetic. Everything that you see in pictures is accurate. I really like the hotel gym -- better than any hotel gym I've been to actually. Clean, well taken care of, and there's a water filter machine there so you can get your water refills. The high end treadmill, the weights, and a Peloton bike? This could make anyone want to stay at the gym. The hotel restaurant - The Helmway served delicious breakfast. We ordered to go orders both days and it was pleasant. Please keep in mind, the Helmway is not open for lunch during the week -- only dinner, so plan accordingly. It was a nice cozy stay. There was actually a wedding after party downstairs at The Helmway, the first night we were there and we didn't hear anything once we got to our room. It made the hotel more lively actually haha. We were a tad worried about the unexpected smoking charges in other reviews, even though none of us smoke. Luckily, nothing happened. We did end up getting the opportunity to check out at 4 PM so we stayed here for a good amount of time.
