Hotel at a Glance: The Pontchartrain Hotel

Perched on St. Charles Avenue in the heart of the Garden District, The Pontchartrain isn’t just a hotel—it’s a New Orleans original. Since 1927, our 14 stories have seen it all, from Mardi Gras parades rolling by to late-night jazz drifting through the halls. With interiors dressed in bold black lacquer, mint-green accents, and layers of Moroccan rugs, we’re equal parts timeless and a little bit eccentric—just like the city we call home. Our rooms and suites are made for more than sleeping. They’re places to recharge, linger, and maybe get inspired by a view of the Crescent City. Step outside your door and the energy shifts from cozy retreat to full-on celebration. At Jack Rose, toast with champagne and dive into Cajun flavors. Upstairs at the Mile High Pie Club, raise a glass beneath the open sky. And in the Living Room, don’t be surprised if you find yourself lounging under Lil Wayne’s gaze while the music keeps the night going. The Pontchartrain is where locals and travelers meet, history and modern flair collide, and every stay feels like a story worth retelling.

New Orleans, LA: Cradle of American Culture and Resilience

New Orleans isn’t just another American city—it’s an original. Born in 1718 under French rule, shaped by Spanish hands, and folded into the U.S. with the Louisiana Purchase, the Crescent City wears its layered past with pride. The French Quarter’s wrought-iron balconies and narrow streets aren’t just for postcards—they’re proof that history here never sits still. At the bend of the Mississippi, New Orleans became a port that welcomed the world—trading not only goods, but people, ideas, and rhythms that would forever change the South. This is the birthplace of jazz, where sound became resistance and celebration all at once. Mardi Gras, second lines, and Sunday brass bands carry on traditions that are equal parts African, Caribbean, and European—woven into something that could only exist here. Through hurricanes, floods, and the kind of challenges that would flatten most places, New Orleans doesn’t just survive—it reinvents. Always honoring its past, always creating something new, and always reminding the world: there’s nowhere else like it.

Absolutely horrible experience The staff person at the front desk when we arrived was rude and condescending. I was obviously sick and barely on my feet, but she wouldn't even attempt to see if there was a room available for early check in at our original arrival nor several hours later. She just looked down her nose and stated "check in is 4 o'clock". When the manager took over at 3:00 she started checking in guests and we were able to get into a room at that time. Obviously there had been some rooms available for hours prior to that. The hotel is horribly under staffed. The manager had to run the front desk, including checking in all the arriving guests (she took over at 3 pm and the staff person before her refused to check in anyone that we saw), handle issues from guests (we called 3 times ourselves) as well as manage everything else. There was absolutely No toilet paper or hangers in the room when we arrived. We had to request them from the front desk. Then when our luggage was brought up 1 of our bags was missing and it took way to long to find it. There's no safe for valuables. The bath towels being in a basket under the sink is a bad design. It's inconvenient and the only place to hang them after use is under the sink right by the exposed dirty pipes which isn't appealing at all. The shower curtain is too short so the floor was soaked after every shower. We'll never go back.

Poor service and location You have no idea how much I regret booking this place. We had a nice hotel that we liked and I so wish we’d gone there instead of this place. We’re nice people but every time we ask the front desk for anything and we feel like they’re doing us a favor. Location sucks. Room smells like my grandma’s assisted living facility. The real horror is the restaurant. Guests get NO priority but the hostess and her buddies get to dictate who eats there. We couldn’t get seated at all (two days we tried to eat here but no one in Site to assist us) so we sat at empty tables and at 6:30 were chased away by said hostess bc she had friends coming at 7:30… I am tempted to cancel the rest of our stay. And this place is NOT walking distance to the French quarter. It stinks… literally and figuratively.

Very average at best I am from New Orleans and recently had a staycation with friends. I hate to give the hotel and average rating but it definitely needs some TLC. It is a little run down and the customer service is lacking. The person at the front desk is not friendly. The wallpaper behind the front desk is very worn. I can point to about 5 things in the room that could be tweaked on a budget to make the room better. I think giving guests a real key is a bad start from the beginning. How does the hotel know someone from a previous stay hasn't copied the key and will get into the room again? I'm hoping that management will re-assess this place and give it some attention. There is a lot of competition in New Orleans and tourism is our bread and butter
