Very average at best I am from New Orleans and recently had a staycation with friends. I hate to give the hotel and average rating but it definitely needs some TLC. It is a little run down and the customer service is lacking. The person at the front desk is not friendly. The wallpaper behind the front desk is very worn. I can point to about 5 things in the room that could be tweaked on a budget to make the room better. I think giving guests a real key is a bad start from the beginning. How does the hotel know someone from a previous stay hasn't copied the key and will get into the room again? I'm hoping that management will re-assess this place and give it some attention. There is a lot of competition in New Orleans and tourism is our bread and butter

Hotel at a Glance: The Pontchartrain Hotel

Perched on St. Charles Avenue in the heart of the Garden District, The Pontchartrain isn’t just a hotel—it’s a New Orleans original. Since 1927, our 14 stories have seen it all, from Mardi Gras parades rolling by to late-night jazz drifting through the halls. With interiors dressed in bold black lacquer, mint-green accents, and layers of Moroccan rugs, we’re equal parts timeless and a little bit eccentric—just like the city we call home. Our rooms and suites are made for more than sleeping. They’re places to recharge, linger, and maybe get inspired by a view of the Crescent City. Step outside your door and the energy shifts from cozy retreat to full-on celebration. At Jack Rose, toast with champagne and dive into Cajun flavors. Upstairs at the Mile High Pie Club, raise a glass beneath the open sky. And in the Living Room, don’t be surprised if you find yourself lounging under Lil Wayne’s gaze while the music keeps the night going. The Pontchartrain is where locals and travelers meet, history and modern flair collide, and every stay feels like a story worth retelling.

New Orleans, LA: Cradle of American Culture and Resilience

New Orleans isn’t just another American city—it’s an original. Born in 1718 under French rule, shaped by Spanish hands, and folded into the U.S. with the Louisiana Purchase, the Crescent City wears its layered past with pride. The French Quarter’s wrought-iron balconies and narrow streets aren’t just for postcards—they’re proof that history here never sits still. At the bend of the Mississippi, New Orleans became a port that welcomed the world—trading not only goods, but people, ideas, and rhythms that would forever change the South. This is the birthplace of jazz, where sound became resistance and celebration all at once. Mardi Gras, second lines, and Sunday brass bands carry on traditions that are equal parts African, Caribbean, and European—woven into something that could only exist here. Through hurricanes, floods, and the kind of challenges that would flatten most places, New Orleans doesn’t just survive—it reinvents. Always honoring its past, always creating something new, and always reminding the world: there’s nowhere else like it.

Financial Scams actively going Do not book here, there is something wrong with management and overall service. I booked through Chase travel using points. However, I was then charged directly by the hotel after my checkout for $1200. Yes, twelve hundred dollars. For a room I already paid for. I called 3 times over 3 days and was completely ignored by 3 people. Pontchartrain could not even send me an email receipt for this "charge" as they could not even see what it was for. They could not even find the one glass of wine I charged to the room. They were clueless and indifferent. Completely unacceptable. What hotel cannot produce receipts to customers or view basic billing?? They also played the hang up game with Chase Travel over two days during Chase's investigation. This hotel is running a scam operation. I was also downgraded my room upon check in without being told while they handed me my key. After I saw that my room was not the King Suite that I booked and paid for, I asked why I was given the family room with two additional twin beds. They told me first, that they overbooked and upgraded other people (this was at 4pm right at check-in), and then that actually this was an "upgrade." Its wasn't. The room is cheaper nightly with less square footage. There was "nothing they could do" to give me the room that I actually booked a month in advance. They owe me money on this downgrade. Another scam. We asked to keep our bags in the lobby bag storage after checkout. Beware, this is a closet that is UNLOCKED (key stuck right in the door for anyone!) during the day, anyone can go in and grab what they want. No tags on anything. Front desk did not seem to mind. We are lucky our items were not grabbed by someone else. I was so looking forward to this stay but it was so pointless and frustrating, only to get a surprise charge for $1200 a couple days later. Please read the recent reviews for similar experiences. Do not book here. summary: fraudulent charges, fraudulent downgrade while charging the upgraded price, incompetent billing, no bag security.

Don’t Stay in Room 315 We had stayed here before and it was a really cute boutique hotel. It has definitely been a while since our last stay and it doesn’t seem that it has been kept up. We checked in on a Thursday night and they gave us a room that didn’t have a key. We were told someone would get us a key but someone would let us in the room until then. Every time we went to the front desk to get the key, they didn’t have it. We woke up the next day and went to the front desk and the new person working had no clue we didn’t have a key. She told us after check out we would get a new room so we were still at their mercy to get into our room. Before we were moved we waited 30 minutes before someone let us in our room. Her excuse was she couldn’t get an elevator. Mind you I went to the front desk 4 different times in that same time period to see if she would call them again to let us in. There are too many nicer hotels in New Orleans to stay in this run down place and to be treated that way. I’ll spend my money elsewhere

Didn't meet expectations We booked our stay at this hotel with the wedding party and expected much more from the reviews and prices. The hotel is rundown with some updates, but the updates were not done professionally - for example, large drips of black paint on the tiles - or completely - while the bathroom seemed new, the carpet looked 20 years old. Worse, as we booked months ago, we were given a room with glazed over windows that allowed in no light -- making it dark and dingy. The rooms were cleaned inconsistently, the floors not swept. The staff were not all professional - I would have given this a 3 star at best. The bar and restaurants were great - I wish the quality and service for the rooms had been the same. The valet was a great help getting me a cab to the hotel and the proximity to restaurants and the trolley were a real plus.

Misleading Reviews! We were completely shocked by the discrepancy between the glowing reviews we read and the reality of our stay at Hotel Ponchatrain. This hotel came up in my search as a boutique hotel with a 4-star rating, and at $400 a night, we expected a far higher standard of comfort and service. If it hadn't been 11 pm when we arrived, we would have immediately found another place to stay. First, we were a little surprised by the minimal greeting upon arrival. Once checked in, we made our way to the elevator and through the hallways, which were dark and eerie. Entering our room only made things worse. The space was drab, tired, and worn. The paint on the walls was dingy, the walls and moldings coated with dust. The view from the windows was abysmal. We understood the hotel was going for a retro style, but we had no idea this meant old, broken-down furniture. The bedding was passable, but the decorative pillows were as faded and drab as the rest of the room. The carpet was old, frayed, and seemed filthy from age, and the bathroom was minimally updated. Almost nothing had been modernized—so much so that I had to search for an outlet to plug my phone in. The overall atmosphere was depressing. Adding to the confusion, the medicine cabinet display filled with old medication bottles and poisons left us unsettled. We tried to understand the atmosphere the hotel was trying to convey, but if any of the hotel information—or even reviews—had hinted at this, we might have been less shocked. Again, had there been any indication in the hotel description, we would have found a place that was a better fit for us. I’m sure there are travelers who have more appreciation for this vintage feel. As we checked out, another guest shared the same observations, making it clear that we weren’t alone in our experience.
