Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic: Waterfalls, Beaches, and Centuries-Old Historical Sites

Situated on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is best known for its sun-kissed beaches. But the province has several breathtaking geographical features inland as well. Damajagua is a natural water park of sorts—it features 27 waterfalls flowing from limestone formations. Tour guides lead groups through the falls, and you can swim and occasionally slide down the natural water slides.

You can get an aerial view of Puerto Plata and the Caribbean Sea on a teleférico, or cable car. One of them climbs 2,565 feet to the apex of Mount Isabel de Torres, which is crowned with botanical gardens and a replica of Rio de Janeiro’s massive Christ the Redeemer statue. Take a scenic drive to Parque Histórico La Isabela and you’ll find the remains of a church as well as the ruins of a colonial village.

Presidential Suites...did not live up to the name. My family and I were a bit disappointed with our stay at the Presidential Suites. The grounds were beautiful and the people were lovely, but the room was outdated and not very clean. Stained sheets were removed just to be replaced with another set of stained sheets. Our stay was for 7 days. We had no hot water the first 4 days. There were roaches in the kitchen and bathroom of our suite. There was no room service and housekeeping did not come daily. 8 16oz water bottles are delivered every 2 days. For a group of 4 in 86 degree weather, that's not much. When I called to request more, the receptionist gave me an attitude and no additional water bottles were received...until the next evening. We were told we'd be taken on a complimentary tour of the property on day 2, which we were really excited about. It turned out to be a very intense sales pitch for us to become members of Lifestyle. I get it, they have a job to do in trying to get more people to sign up. After about 4 hours, we were over it and just wanted to be taken back to our room, which we stated several times. They didn't want to take no for an answer. It became pretty aggressive. Instead of taking us back to our room, we were left to wait for a shuttle that took quite some time to come. After several hours in the heat, you can imagine how frustrating that was for us. We received a map of the property that detailed all the restaurants and their locations with the hours of operation listed. The times shown for dining at the restaurants weren't accurate and it didn't show what was open/closed on specific days of the week. We did enjoy every restaurant. The food was delicious and service was great. On several occasions, the staff offered us rides to our destination in their golf cart/buggy...which they didn't have to do. We appreciated those gestures. The best part of the trip was our spa treatment. The 4 of us received the best massages we've ever had. I wouldn't recommend staying at the Presidential Suites with the rooms being unkept. If you like killing roaches on vacation...have at it! I can't speak on the other resorts, as there are several on the property. I feel it'd be best to stay at one of the villas. Those were immaculate! I didn't intend on writing an essay lol...but there's my truth!

Very disappointed Let begin with the positives. At the presidential Suites, the rooms are very nice, comfortable, bright and clean. The food is pretty good, no complains about that, whether is a la carte restaurant or the buffet. Now, if are not a member, your options are very limited when trying to reserve a table at any of their a la cart restaurant. Here I come with the negatives: I noticed many staff members with inappropriate behavior. Often making comments that made us feel very uncomfortable. one night, my sister, friends and I went to the casino, the security guard at the door grabbed my sister by the waist and said come on ladies drinks are on me "as a joke". My sister, obviously, didn't like it and asked him not to touch her. As we walked away, I stayed a little behind and heard the security guard calling my sister "ugly little bitch". This is the closest I could translate to English, but trust me, it was worse. Immediately I went to the person in charge to file a complaint. While I was speaking to the person in charge, the security guard came to confront me. When I repeated that he called my sister "ugly little bitch" his words to me were as follow: "I wish you were a man , so I can bit you up". I am still in chuck. After that, he was taken to the other side of the room. The manager took my name and room number and had someone to escorted us to our room. We did not feel safe. Our night was done. We had to stay in our room because there was no other place to go. Next day in the afternoon, I went to the front desk and I filed a written report. At that point, the front desk did not know about the incident at all. Later on the night we went back to the casino, the security guard was still there, my friends didn't want to stay because they didn't feel safe and we ended going back to the room early one more night. I suggest Lifestyle Hotels should better train their staff. I have been to many resorts before and I never had such a bad experience. It is a shame that it happened in my own country.
