Hotel at a Glance: The Queen Mary

After its maiden voyage in 1936, the RMS Queen Mary became one of the most famous ocean liners in the world. In its heyday, celebrities such as Bob Hope, Audrey Hepburn, and Fred Astaire boarded the luxurious ship. During World War II, it was converted into a troopship, and after that, it became Winston Churchill’s carrier of choice. The Queen Mary has since retired to the docks of Long Beach and is now a glamorous floating hotel with an Old-World vibe. Some say it’s even a little haunted.

  • Elegant dining: Enjoy a contemporary take on the traditional fish house at Chelsea Chowder House & Bar, or try chateaubriand steak amid ocean views at Sir Winston’s Restaurant & Lounge.
  • Observation Bar: Housed in the boat’s former first-class lounge, this is the place to go for classic cocktails. The bar retains its 1930s vibe with torchiere lamps and original Art Deco artwork.
  • Queen Mary Christmas: Starting November 23 and until January 6, 2019, Queen Mary takes her patrons for a one-of-a-kind winter adventure to the North Pole. Decks adorned with glistening light displays, sweet treats, and musical performances transport the visitors to the magical Christmas of yesteryear, helmed by the white-bearded red-suited captain. Ho ho ho! Admission is included when you reserve a room.
  • Queen Mary Champagne Brunch: Named by Conde Nast Traveler one of the best brunches in the world, and also a local favorite, the Queen Mary Champagne Sunday Brunch takes visitors on a worldwide culinary adventure, featuring over 50 unique dishes from around the globe and plenty of champagne (for an additional fee).
  • Multitude of attractions: Choose from many additional experiences, including the Steam and Steel Tour, Glory Days Tour, Haunted Encounters Tour, Paranormal Ship Walk, and more. Your stay includes two theatre tickets and two tickets to the Churchill exhibit.

Long Beach, California: Art, Architecture, and the Historic Queen Mary

One of Long Beach’s most iconic attractions floats in the harbor across the bay: the Queen Mary, a former ocean liner and current museum-hotel hybrid. Built in the early 1930s as a luxury liner for the wealthy elite, the Queen Mary was transformed into a troopship during World War II. After nearly two more decades of civilian service, the ship retired to Long Beach. Thousands of annual visitors take guided tours of the boat, which is larger than the Titanic.

Back on land, independent playhouses and art galleries line the streets of the East Village Arts District. On the second Saturday of each month, the neighborhood hosts an art walk where galleries, boutiques, and cafés stay open late and local artists display original works. Long Beach’s architecture also has its own appeal. Geometry buffs may marvel at the Walter Pyramid sports arena, as well as the aptly named Skinny House at 708 Gladys Avenue, a 10-foot-wide structure reportedly built on a bet.

Beautiful time capsule and in urgent need of repairs My family has stayed several times on the Queen Mary. It is like stepping back in time - you expect Cary Grant to walk around the next corner! The lodgings and eateries are incredible! The staff is friendly and professional and goes above and beyond in all ways. But this is more than just a beautiful old ship with good restaurant and hotel service and good staff.. It played multiple key roles in the Allied war effort in WWII. This living chunk of history is in desperate need of our help! The City of Long Beach has recently re-acquired the QM, and its last owners did not do the needed maintenance and upkeep. When the City took it back over, they had a meeting to figure out what to do with her, and horrifyingly, there was a suggestion to either sell her for scrap or scuttle her for an artificial reef!!! This ship is where Churchill signed the orders for the D-Day invasion that secured an Allied victory in WWII, among other accomplishments in its long and storied career. During the COVID crisis, the QM has been closed, so I don't think you can walk aboard and talk to someone. We need to all contact the City of Long Beach and send money! Look up the address on their website as TripAdvisor wouldn't let me post it on here. The Statue of Liberty's torch was saved in the 80s by a mail campaign asking kids to donate five bucks each - I know - I was one of the kids who sent in five bucks. This site needs to be preserved for the future. Please help save the Queen Mary! The stunning beauty and historical importance of this ship cannot be overstated.

Time capsule We are reading some reviews of the Queen Mary and feel that they are very unfair. We booked two nights as our first stop from the UK on a fly drive through California We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel pricing was very reasonable and value for money. The beds were large clean and comfortable. People need to realise this is 90 year old ship undergoing renovations, Its not going to be perfectly plastic. The food was lovely and staff polite and helpful. We unexpectedly bumped into the hotel manager outside the swimming pool area and we’re given a free personal tour including locked areas. He disappeared as quickly as he arrived and to this day we’re not sure if he was for real or a ghost! If you love your history and want a unique clean value for money hotel we would thoroughly recommend. In addition the water taxi from the ship across the bay was a bit choppy but shout out to the brilliant captain who kept us safe And entertained. Bargain price too!
