Resort at a Glance: The Reef Playacar Resort and Spa

At The Reef Playacar Resort and Spa, a short walk is all that separates you from warm white sand and the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. Native birds and palm trees line the resort’s winding paths, and the foliage grows right up into the interior of the Reef Spa. This same jungle-like setting surrounds swimming pools and performance venues, which host entertainment day and night.

  • Onsite dining: three international restaurants, including Botticelli, an Italian à la carte eatery, and the Chula Vista buffet. There’s also a snack bar, an ice-cream parlor, and an outdoor tea café.
  • Sip a cold beer at five bars, including one swim-up bar and one on the beach.
  • Learn something new: Resort instructors teach dance, Spanish, and scuba demonstrations in the pool.
  • Explore the coastline: Check out the resort’s complimentary sea kayaks, bicycles, and snorkeling gear.
  • Local tours: Swim with dolphins, explore Mayan ruins, and ride horseback (additional fees apply).
  • Optional upgrades include unlimited top-shelf spirits, motorized watersports, and romantic dinners along the beach.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico: Trendy Beach Area and Diving Destination

Just across the sea from the island of Cozumel, Playa del Carmen has been called “the hippest city in all of the Yucatán Peninsula” by Lonely Planet. The laid-back beach bars and cafés have a way of converting vacationers into expats, but Playa’s most compelling draw might be its cenotes—cavernous sinkholes filled with turquoise pools. The water in the cenotes is crystal clear, particularly at the lily-pad-dotted Xlacah cenote, where you can snorkel among schools of colorful fish.

To the south, you’ll find preserved ruins of pre-Columbian cities. Tulum’s crumbling temples are situated above a dramatic ocean bluff, and Coba’s enormous pyramid rises between two lagoons. For a fun day trip, hop aboard the ferry to Cozumel, which docks at the pier east of Calle 1. There are about a dozen dive shops on Cozumel, and they offer trips offshore to the reefs that Jacques Cousteau declared some of the world’s most beautiful.

Allowing for cultural differences, the food was still really not very good. It LOOKED great, but our entire family went looking for food elsewhere. We also don't really drink, so the value there was limited. Finally, the rooms were stunningly overpriced given the amenities (lack of any actual seating besides the beds and two wooden chairs) and 3 electrical outlets in the room (leaving us all to fight for power). All in all, it might be ok at half the price. Staff was certainly nice enough, but fool me once.

The resort is beautiful, well taken care of. The room was clean, the air conditioner worked beautifully. They WILL try to get you to visit the sister resort- CoCo Beach- and bribe you with hydrotherapy, and a breakfast with “a view of the ocean”. Don’t fall for it! We were told it would be a 90 minute presentation that turned to taking 4.5 hours out of day! The food is mediocre. KNOW SOME SPANISH!

WOW!!! The Reef Playacar Resort experience was AMAZING! My husband & I were treated like royalty. We made a room change day 2 due to my disability & the front desk handled it asap. Every single employee was friendly, respectful, helpful & accommodating. The food was delicious & we had plenty of options to choose from. Every staff member wore a mask & kept cleaning all the time. I highly recommend!

The communication between staff is terrible. Our room was not like it was described. I guess you get what you paid for. The food was not good either. Unfortunately I will not be coming back to this hotel. Also, do not fall for the time share deals when you arrive at the hotel.

Food was not enjoyable, no real entertainment. Beach was very nice minus the men selling drugs & crap every 5 mins. 5th street is great and the staff was great but we won’t be returning
