Resort at a Glance: The Reef Playacar Resort & Spa

At The Reef Playacar Resort & Spa, a short walk is all that separates you from warm white sand and the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. Native birds and palm trees line the resort's winding paths, and the foliage grows right up into the interior of the Reef Spa. This same jungle-like setting surrounds swimming pools and performance venues, which host entertainment day and night.

  • Onsite dining: three restaurants, including Botticelli, an Italian à la carte eatery; Terraza Grill, a Mexican à la carte restaurant; and the Chulavista buffet. There's also a snack bar, an ice-cream parlor, and an outdoor tea café.
  • Sip a cold beer at one of the bars, including a swim-up bar and one on the beach.
  • Learn something new: Resort instructors teach scuba in the pool.
  • Explore the coastline: Check out the resort's sea kayaks, bicycles, and snorkeling gear.
  • Enjoy nightly shows and live entertainment at the Theater.
  • Local tours: Swim with dolphins, explore Mayan ruins, and take part in a pirate night show (additional fees apply).

Playa del Carmen, Mexico: Trendy Beach Area and Diving Destination

Just across the sea from the island of Cozumel, Playa del Carmen has been called "the hippest city in all of the Yucatán Peninsula" by Lonely Planet. The laid-back beach bars and cafés have a way of converting vacationers into expats, but Playa's most compelling draw might be its cenotes—cavernous sinkholes filled with turquoise pools. The water in the cenotes is crystal clear, particularly at the lily-pad-dotted Xlacah cenote, where you can snorkel among schools of colorful fish.

To the south, you'll find preserved ruins of pre-Columbian cities. Tulum's crumbling temples are situated above a dramatic ocean bluff, and Coba's enormous pyramid rises between two lagoons. For a fun day trip, hop aboard the ferry to Cozumel, which docks at the pier east of Calle 1. There are about a dozen dive shops on Cozumel, and they offer trips offshore to the reefs that Jacques Cousteau declared some of the world's most beautiful.

Just don’t do it. If I could pick 0 stars - I would. Where should I start? 1. Quality of rooms. We had to switch rooms due to excessive mold issue and room being on the edge of falling apart. Rusty handles, stained bedding, hairs in the bathroom. We had to see 3 rooms to actually find something semi-decent. Phones don’t work in any of the rooms. 2. Service. Terrible. Just non-existent. Anything you need, you need to wait for. And you might get it if you remind of your needs multiple times. All team members act like they are not interested in assisting people. Checked in late - have yourself a room with a view of the Roof of maintenance building. Want to move room - keep wasting your day. I tried reaching them over the phone - no one responded. Breakfast opens at 7. But that doesn’t mean you get to enjoy it at 7, wait for 20 min to get it set up. We were guests of the wedding and we have not seen any coordination done. I think bride and groom can share better experience, but if you consider wedding at this hotel, just don’t. 3. Grounds. Worn out. Old, falling apart sunbeds, bars which crowded and have slow service. Best thing they do is tell you - we already closed. Pool closes at 7pm. Only 1 available food outlet after dinner ( so in case you missed out due to taking excursion or leaving property - best of luck finding dining option. Pools look overcrowded and dirty. At the very least I was about to check out while waiting on taxi, and particularly asked if I should get myself coffee first. FRont desk said I’m ok to check out first. After I did, they asked me to pay for coffee cos I checked out. Really? Opinion changed within minute. That is about all I can tell about this resort.

Stay elsewhere First and foremost don't stay here.... Do not get premium AI, it is not much different than regular. We were told with premium we could go to NICOS beach bar, and we were ran off and embarrassed. Told by the employees that we could not drink there because we are not members, it was very embarrassing. The premium all inclusive does not do much more for you than the regular inclusive so don’t waste your money. The same crappy house wine is offered under both plans. They make it hard as heck for you to get a dinner reservation. The best experience we have was at their sister company, and that was Japanese restaurant if that can be noted. The buffet never stayed stocked, although it has a great view, the food was almost not edible, and I’m not even a picky eater. One thing that sold us on this place is that they had a late night snack bar, even though was not a lot of options during the day at night. It was even worse at night. They only offer tacos. During the day every single day, they only offered about half of the menu because they were out of the other items that are supposed to be offered off of the menu, I would assume we can chalk this up to bad food and beverage management or intentional bad inventory to save the resort money. The location here is beautiful, the groundskeeping team and housekeeping team were wonderful, the hospitality from the front desk, workers and or bartenders and waitresses still lacks a lot. I don’t remember one person‘s name and after being there for seven days and eight nights that is absurd. Nobody seemed happy to be there. Well, my husband and I do not mind children, there was more children in this resort than I ever anticipated, especially for the last week of September going into October when school is in session, definitely family friendly if that’s what you’re looking for, not couple friendly, On the premium all-inclusive, you have certain areas that you can sit that most other people can’t sit, well that’s not the truth. People with regular bands were also sitting in the premium all inclusive . Sometimes dirty plates would sit around the grounds and outside of people rooms for days on time, it’s a wonder there is not rats everywhere. Now that I have done more research, we could have stayed somewhere with a better location and definitely better accommodations for the price we paid. Will not stay at the Reef resort again, I had to revise my review because I listed something in there before I wasn’t allowed to, even when the Reef did reply to my last review, all they did was say thank you for the compliments. Sorry you had a bad time, that’s not really enough. Just stay away from this place. Don’t let it ruin your vacation, it’s got a beautiful beach, the pool is OK. But also you’re extremely far away from fifth, that wouldn’t have bothered us if there was any kind of great entertainment at this resort but there was, but there was not. Like literally one Michael Jackson show. Also, the language barriers at this resort, made it very frustrating, very few people speak any kind of English you kind of just have to point and hope for the best. There are several resorts there with a price point, the same as the reefs, stay elsewhere. Trust me. Do not stay here!!!!!!

Summer Holiday Mexico 2025 Stayed here for 12 nights and had a excellent tine. The landscape is what makes the place a class above and the rooms are well furnished. The foods and drink wax plenty and varied the pools are a good size but shallow at 4ft deep. The beach was amazing. The only thing we didn't enjoy was the entertainment as it was mexican orientated and we found it hard to enjoy being from England
