Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic: Waterfalls, Beaches, and Centuries-Old Historical Sites

Situated on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is best known for its sun-kissed beaches. But the province has several breathtaking geographical features inland as well. Damajagua is a natural water park of sorts—it features 27 waterfalls flowing from limestone formations. Tour guides lead groups through the falls, and you can swim and occasionally slide down the natural water slides.

You can get an aerial view of Puerto Plata and the Caribbean Sea on a teleférico, or cable car. One of them climbs 2,565 feet to the apex of Mount Isabel de Torres, which is crowned with botanical gardens and a replica of Rio de Janeiro’s massive Christ the Redeemer statue. Take a scenic drive to Parque Histórico La Isabela and you’ll find the remains of a church as well as the ruins of a colonial village.

Beautiful Property, Great Value, Mixed Dining, and Standout Service - A memorable getaway that didn’t break the bank! We booked this last-minute trip when Hurricane Melissa changed our Jamaica plans, and for $499 (tax included) via Groupon, Lifestyle Holidays offered excellent value. Check-in was smooth, and the bellhop/front desk staff were attentive. Casablanca became our go-to for breakfast and lunch. Great daily variety, excellent omelets, and warm service—especially from a tall, slim young lady on the waitstaff who consistently stood out. Bellini also delivered exceptional service from Yesenia Díaz and omelet chef Saul Rojas. The à la carte restaurants were inconsistent. Rodizio was the only one we enjoyed. Blue Lagoon and Indochine were disappointing in portions, and quality. The swim-up bar was fun, and we enjoyed endless Piña Coladas. Evening activities were mediocre, though the dancers were lively and engaging. We loved the Silent Disco sessions. There were off-resort tours available through the resort, but we chose to hire a taxi and explore on our own, a breath of fresh air. Our guide was excellent. Bracelet levels matter. Access to restaurants, beaches, and activities depends on your color. With a VIP blue bracelet, we were fortunate to enjoy many of the VIP amenities. The biggest downside was the high-pressure sales pitch, even after we repeatedly declined and explained my dad was a CC member. We were passed through several representatives (4) and even asked to provide our credit score. At the end when we declined yet again, we were bid farewell and left to find our own way out, which we found rather laughable. Overall, the resort provides good value, beautiful grounds, and some standout service—but dining, sales tactics, and activities could be improved. And while our family is returning next September for a big gathering, after this experience, I think we’ll sit that one out. Still, for five days, four nights, all-inclusive, with VIP perks for only $499, the value was undeniable. A few quirks, plenty of laughs, for the price, and a memorable getaway that didn’t break the bank. Service: ★★★☆☆ Food: ★★☆☆☆ Room: ★★★☆☆ Amenities: ★★★☆☆ Entertainment: ★★☆☆☆ Overall: ★★★☆☆
