During your stay at The Resort at Glade Springs, there's a chance you might not do everything that the hotel has to offer. It's that big. The resort sits on a 4,100-acre property in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, and its campus boasts three 18-hole championship golf courses, a 10-lane bowling alley, two pools, basketball and tennis courts, a movie theater, hiking and biking trails, and an equestrian center. You can also sign up for high-octane excursions, including whitewater rafting on the Gauley River and ziplining.
Treat yourself to a full-body massage or signature facial at Spa Orange
Head to Mallard Lake to fish, canoe, kayak, or paddleboat
Other things to do: Archery, geocaching, wild cave tours, fishing—there's no end to the activities here
Daniels, West Virginia: Outdoor Recreation in the Appalachian Mountains
One of the most popular activities in this stretch of West Virginia is whitewater rafting along the New River. On guided rafting expeditions, paddlers navigate treacherous Class III, IV, and V rapids and pass through the New River Gorge, nicknamed the "Grand Canyon of the East." Rafters also glide beneath the world's second-longest single span arch. Grandview State Park offers aerial views of the meandering waterway, surrounded by velvety green rolling hills.
In nearby Beckley, you can learn more about the area's longstanding coal mining history at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and Youth Museum. Here, visitors can ride a train through the darkened tunnels of a vintage coal mine, while veteran miners deliver a guided tour. A historical village outside the museum recreates what life was like at a coal camp in the early 20th century.
