Hotel at a Glance: The Resort on Mount Charleston

The Resort on Mount Charleston is only about 30 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, but it seems the world away. The atmosphere is rustic and relaxed, the views are of mountains instead of neon, and the temps are usually about 20 degrees cooler. It makes a great year-round getaway for those looking for a little nature without venturing too far from the non-stop action Vegas is famous for.

  • Distance from Las Vegas: about 35 miles
  • Onsite dining: A Cut Above Restaurant serves breakfast staples, as well as steaks, cocktails, and more for dinner.
  • Fun in the snow: In the winter months the area is full of outdoor activity options, such as skiing, sledding, and snowboarding.
  • Lace up your hiking boots: You will find trails for everybody, from the easy to the truly demanding ones.
  • In-room perks: Guest rooms come with pillow-top mattresses, iPod docking stations, and flat-panel TVs with HBO and Cinemax channels; some units have balconies overlooking the mountains.
  • Pet-friendly rooms are available for those with pets up to 25 pounds (additional fees apply).

Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas and Red Rock Canyon

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

CAUTION!! Be aware of EXTRA charges you did not incur. CAUTION!! CAUTION!! CAUTION!! We stayed from Friday, July 2nd to Sunday, July 4th. We checked out in the morning, before 11 am. We were presented a receipt in the amount of $393. This is the correct charge for TWO nights, tax, resort fees and room service. On my statement for the credit card provided, there are now TWO fraudulent charges done by the hotel. One for $222.08 and one for $50, both listed under the "Lodging" category.  I am assuming it is a charge for another night and a late check out, as the charge was initiated on July 4th. The day we checked out.  We did not stay three nights, nor did we check out late. Be aware of unmitigated charges on your card if you stay here. And not getting any resolution to the extra charges. The "owners" and/or "management" absolutely REFUSE to return phone calls or emails. We have tried, several times, to contact the appropriate person to help rectify this issue. They WILL NOT contact us in response to the calls/emails.

Many More Upgrades Needed Aside from the courtesy of the staff, I really wish I had more to brag about here. Apparently recent renovations were done to the rooms, which I interpreted only to be upgraded wood laminate flooring, which was poorly installed, (warped and misaligned). Beyond this, they are in need of much much more when it comes to making these rooms more enjoyable and clean. Furniture was noticeably old and dirty, night stand was sticky, and the accumulation of dust and dead bugs was definitely an unappealing sight. Smashed flies on the ceiling and walls, and various spackle repairs which were not painted over, plus a small collection of opened snacks from previous guests was stashed in the cabinet. The entire room just seemed very unclean. Food was good, service was quick and attentive, but the fly situation was incredibly annoying.
