Scottsdale, Arizona: Stucco Mansions amid Rocky Desert Landscape

Scottsdale once served as ranch land where farmers grew oranges and lemons and cowboys kicked up dust in the fierce, dry heat of the Sonoran Desert. That era earned Scottsdale the nickname of “The West's Most Western Town.” Today, it is an affluent city landscaped with lush green grass and lined with stucco mansions. For a glimpse of the city's Old West roots, head to Old Town Scottsdale, where wooden boardwalks and hitching posts sit in front of a retro ice-cream parlor and rustic specialty shops.

Upon arriving in Scottsdale, you know you're in the desert—cacti and tumbleweeds dot the landscape, and dry shrubs and gnarled trees cover the McDowell Mountains in the distance. To get a closer look at Southwestern flora, head to the Desert Botanical Garden. There, themed trails wind past huge cacti and other moisture-hoarding succulents, best seen in the cooler early morning or twilight hours.

An Incredible Stay & Dining Experience at Hecho Libre and Miralina Resort! Our stay at the Miralina Resort in Scottsdale was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. The resort itself is beautifully maintained, with nicely renovated rooms that feel fresh, modern, and incredibly comfortable. Everything was spotless and thoughtfully designed. Despite being close to all the action, the property felt peaceful and quiet — the perfect place to truly relax. One of the highlights is the easy access to Scottsdale. Whether you want to explore shopping, dining, or nightlife, everything is just a short drive away — yet you still get that serene resort atmosphere when you return. The resort also offers multiple pools to choose from, which we loved. Whether you’re looking for a lively vibe or a quieter spot to unwind, there’s something for everyone. Dining at Hecho Libre was the cherry on top of an already wonderful stay. The waitstaff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, offering great recommendations and attentive service throughout the evening. The menu is exceptionally well executed. The Halibut Veracruzana was fresh and flavorful, the tacos were absolutely delicious, and the steaks were cooked perfectly — tender, juicy, and full of flavor. Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared, and the quality you receive provides tremendous value for the money. Between the outstanding dining and the relaxing, well-appointed resort experience, this was truly a five-star getaway. We can’t wait to return — a great experience all around!

Not up to Kimpton Standards…. Below average hotel..somehow Kimpton puts its reputation on the line. Room was noisy and had a bathroom that wasn’t properly cleaned. The grounds and lobby are kept nicely, but overall just not a “resort” by any means. Typical overpriced Scottsdale hotel…based on dynamic pricing.

Renovated? Mostly. As frequent Kimpton guests (having stayed at properties in San Diego, Chicago, Boston, Tokyo, and Bangkok), we arrived at Kimpton Miralina with high expectations based on publications that reviewed the extensive renovation. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to the brand standard. The Good: The lobby design is truly gorgeous and reflects the aesthetic we love about Kimpton. The Room: We booked a Canyon Casita (a one-bedroom suite), which is marketed as fully renovated. While the carpet and most furniture are new, the renovation is incomplete. The bathrooms are original to the previous resort, featuring dated 2000s-style travertine tiles—a far cry from the spa-like bathrooms Kimpton is known for. Additionally, the old, loud fans, outdated hardware, and original light switches clashed with the new decor. At $700/night, the value simply wasn't there. The Service: Check-in was transactional and lacked the warmth we usually enjoy. When we raised our concerns with the supervisor, Carol, she seemed unclear about what had actually been renovated. We were shown a lower-category room as an alternative, but it had the same dated bathroom issues and surprisingly worn carpeting. Ultimately, we chose to cancel our stay. While we appreciate the full refund, we hope this helps others level-set their expectations regarding the "renovated" rooms.
