Loved the location, and the services are great. Starbucks is just downstairs. Even better.🙂 The beds are a queen size, which is doable, but they can be a standard king size like most hotels.

Hotel at a Glance: The Sofia Hotel

When it was built in downtown San Diego in 1927, The Sofia Hotel was known as the Pickwick, a swanky art-deco spot hidden inside a red-brick Neo-Gothic building. Now nearing its 90th birthday, the hotel recently underwent a multimillion-dollar overhaul to restore it to its former grandeur. Guests can embrace the decadent spirit of the Roaring Twenties by sipping aperitifs in one of the Sofia’s recent additions, an elegant French-inspired bistro.

  • Savor duck confit and steamed mussels amid sparkling chandeliers and checkered floors at Currant American Brasserie, the hotel’s restaurant.
  • In-room amenities: pillow-top mattresses, WiFi, and large flat-screen TVs
  • Neighborhood tour: The hotel conducts walking tours of the nearby Gaslamp District.
  • Indulge in aromatherapy and a variety of massage, body, and facial treatments in the spa treatment room.
  • Yoga classes available Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings.
  • Press mention: Frommer’s says the hotel “works for a lot of different crowds—business travelers, downtown revelers, and serenity seeking vacationers.”

San Diego, California: Historical Attractions and Electric Nightlife in Southern California

San Diego’s sunny, comfortably warm weather and 70 miles of coastline have long attracted vacationing out-of-towners, but the city’s inland scene is no slouch, either. The Gaslamp Quarter is arguably the trendiest listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The area forms both the historic center of town and a hub of San Diego nightlife, with nearly 100 Victorian-era buildings occupied by high-end boutiques, jewelers, and gourmet restaurants.

A stroll through iconic Balboa Park takes you past 17 separate museums, as well as the world-famous and much beloved San Diego Zoo. There’s also the vibrant Spanish Village Art Center, a living gallery where local artists produce pottery, handblown glass, and oil paintings for sale.

Farther north, in Old Town—site of the first European settlement in California—shops in Mission-style stucco buildings sell colorful wrestling masks, woven baskets, and maracas. Nearby stands the Whaley House Museum, dubbed one of the Most Terrifying Places in America by the Travel Channel. Ghosts of former residents are said to inhabit the rooms, which are filled with Victorian furniture, eerie dolls, and squeegees for ectoplasm cleanup.

Great Boutique hotel walking distance (3 Blocks almost to far of a walk but do-able) to the Gas Lamp Quarter. Some dirty sidewalks and homeless :( :(

Great location for a quick trip Stayed for two nights solo in August 2024. Room was a bit on the smaller side, but clean and had no issues. In a perfect location in downtown San Diego. Also, the water coolers on each floor were among the purest, most refreshing water I have ever had.

Just good location everything else Not as expected The hotel has a very good location, but everything eles has poor Quality. The room is not confortable, there is no extra Space besides the beds to put the luggage, the bathroom is so small, the water from the bathtub didn’t Run away easily; the air conditioner made a lot of noise so I couldn’t sleep.

Nice hotel but small room This is a nice historic hotel fairly close to a tram stop and cafes within walking distance. However the room was pretty small and felt cramped with two beds in it. We thought it would have been better to have one larger bed. Not much space to store your suitcases. The wash basin was outside the bathroom which I wasn’t keen on. It did have a fridge and a microwave which came in very handy. A Keurig machine was provided. They don’t provide kettles but told us you could get hot water from Starbucks next door which we did as we wanted to use our own teabags. You have to fiddle with the controls to get the right temperature in the shower. The towels are pretty small, not the smallest I’ve come across but close. The staff are friendly and helpful. I had a pinafore dry cleaned (they only offer dry cleaning) which worked well & came back at the agreed time. So, overall, nice hotel but we wouldn’t stay there again as the room was just a bit too cramped to be that comfortable.
