The Stewart House at the Athens Hotel
The Stewart House at the Athens Hotel has overlooked the Hudson River since its opening in 1883. The three-story Victorian-inspired hotel has changed hands many times throughout the centuries, but the latest owner, Owen Lipstein, has painstakingly renovated and restored it. Lipstein also updated the historical inn with 21st-century amenities—including new heating, electricity, and updated bathrooms.
- Where you’ll stay: The boutique hotel’s guest rooms and suites are rustic and chic, with white billowing drapes, hardwood floors, and exposed brick chimneys.
- Choose a suite for the most space. The Romeo and Juliet suite sits on the third-floor penthouse overlooking the Hudson River. On a clear night, you can see the lights of New York City from the Hudson River Suite.
- Go for a stroll through the River Garden, whose walkways are lined with flowers and shrubs. Grab some shade beneath the pergola.
- Tuck into a meal at the inn’s bistro, open Thursday through Sunday in the winter.
- In-room amenities: Flat-screen TV, heated towel racks, and complimentary WiFi
- The press room: Hudson Valley Magazine recently named the hotel “one of the hottest fall getaways of 2014.”
Athens, New York: Quaint Town Along the Hudson River
Nestled in upstate New York’s scenic Hudson River Valley, Athens is a quaint riverside village once known as a hub for brick-making and shipbuilding. Today, its main drag is populated by a row of boutiques and mom-and-pop eateries, housed in storefronts that date to the late 19th century. More than 300 buildings in Athens belong to national and state-level historic registers.
The Hudson-Athens Lighthouse, hunkered on a tiny island in the middle of the river, opens to the public a few times a year. If you’re lucky enough to visit while the lighthouse is open, it’s worth it to take a boat ride out to the island and tour the structure, built in 1874. Otherwise, you can take a cruise down the Hudson and snap a photo as you sail by.
