Touted as the tallest hotel west of the Mississippi when it was built in 1923, The Stoneleigh Hotel & Spa underwent a $36 million renovation in 2008 to revitalize its Roaring Twenties splendor. The hotel’s 11 terra-cotta and brick-ornamented stories have played host to a number of celebrities, from Frank Lloyd Wright and Judy Garland to Tom Cruise and Simon Cowell. Today, 170 sumptuous rooms and suites decorated in art-deco style look out on the streets of Dallas’s bustling Uptown neighborhood.
Classic guest rooms are spacious and chic, with 42-inch flat-screen TVs and decor that feels contemporary even as it calls to mind the Jazz Age. In the morning, head down to the onsite Graze Restaurant and Bar for a complimentary breakfast. Later in the day, you can enjoy a reflexology treatment, a massage, or a detoxifying facial at the hotel's acclaimed holistic spa.
Dallas: Haven for Arts, Culture, and Outdoor Recreation
Located fewer than 3 miles from downtown Dallas, the Uptown neighborhood is rife with museums, private galleries, antique shops, and parks. A trek through the neighborhood leads past the Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher Sculpture Center as well as free, tucked-away gems such as the Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art and the figurine-filled American Museum of the Miniature Arts. Just blocks from the hotel, joggers and bikers wend their way through Uptown's Turtle Creek neighborhood via the Katy Trail, which follows the path of a venerable interstate railroad.
After a visit to the newly developed Victory Park District, head to the brick sidewalks of the Historic West End District, a neighborhood dating back to the late 19th century. The West End became especially notable when President Kennedy was assassinated at Dealey Plaza in November 1963. At The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, you can visit the sixth floor of the former Texas School Book Depository, where Lee Harvey Oswald is believed to have shot at Kennedy’s presidential motorcade.
