Calistoga, California: Down-to-Earth Hamlet in Northern Napa Valley

The story goes like this: 19th-century developer Samuel Brannan wanted to create a West Coast version of Saratoga Springs (renowned at the time for its mineral spas), but he had been drinking when he made the announcement and so the name came out garbled as the “Calistoga of Sarifornia.” This origin myth sounds a little fishy, but nevertheless, Brannan’s vision of creating a relaxing and therapeutic Napa Valley getaway was eventually realized. Thanks to the area’s natural hot springs, a slew of spas sprang up, offering restorative mineral soaks and mud baths. You can still find many such businesses peppered among the restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries lining Calistoga’s quaint, quiet main street, which is set against a backdrop of rolling hills.

Those hills are home to some of Napa Valley’s more than 400 wineries, many of which lie within a short drive of downtown Calistoga. The curious wine lover can choose from a wide array of vineyard experiences, ranging from tours to tastings at wineries modeled on English castles and Tuscan villas. In the springtime, these visits may even be augmented by blossom; the hills are known for their fragrant flowering trees. One word of warning: many of these places require reservations, so be sure to book in advance.

Beautiful Bachelorette Base We enjoyed every minute at Calistoga Motor Lodge and Spa. The ambiance is on point, the staff were the most helpful and patient (Kim and Crystal -thanks for the keys, the recommendations, and your great service all around), the pool was relaxing with lots of places to fit our bigger group! The newly opened restaurant attached to the hotel was fantastic as well! The drinks were delicious, the wine selection was impeccable, and everything our group tried was mouthwatering. 10/10 would stay here again! it was also very easy to walk into town for food, breweries/wineries, cafes, shopping, bars, and more!

Awesome stay! Cristel at the front desk was so helpful and attentive! She made my stay wonderful. I recommend the "adult swim" at night. No kids and a glass of wine in their big hot tub was exactly what I needed after a long day.

Mid Week Fog Escape Getting out of San Francisco's July fog was the best idea made better by a stay at Calistoga Motor Lodge and Spa. I've been coming here for years and the restaurant and spa are now complete and absolutely fantastic. Fleetwood is chic and well designed and the food was exactly what you'd expect from a Bay Area/Wine country offering. Delicious flavor profiles, yummy artisanal cocktails and the casual vibe of wine country. The rooms are cute and comfy. Because this was a hybrid remote work stay/vacation, we opted for the Camper suite which offered a dining area and a separate bedroom which was perfect for the two laptops we had fired up during the hottest parts of the day, taking advantage of the sweet air conditioning! One thing to note is that there are two Adult Swim times-12:30-2:30 and 9-10:30. Some parents had a hard time remembering that detail and it made those of us who were longing for some child free time a little cranky. It's post COVID and w'eve all be cooped up way too long, so I get it but it would be a boon if there was a little more structure from hotel staff around those times so that enjoying our time poolside didn't include a trip to the front desk to ask about corralling kids out of the pools. The best news, courtesy of Kim and Esme, is that there is another, bigger pool in the works and it will be ADULTS ONLY!!!!! Music to my childless ears. Thank you, CML!! We love your pool, your people, and the fun times. Will definitely be back for more and can't wait for the new pool!
