Hotel at a Glance: The Union Hotel
It’s safe to assume that the Union Hotel has seen its fair share of drunken revelry. The building has housed a tavern since 1802. It’s also served as a hotel, a storefront, and temporary housing for Union soldiers over the years, but the tavern element has remained constant. Today, guests of the bed and breakfast can still grab pints of locally brewed beer on site.
- Home cooking: House-cured corned beef and handmade pastas anchor the menu at the onsite restaurant.
- Free breakfast is included with each stay.
- A fresh coat of paint: The bed and breakfast was completely renovated in 2009.
- In-room amenities: flat-screen TVs, granite and marble bathrooms, and WiFi
Everett, Pennsylvania: Gateway to the Alleghenies
Tucked into a valley in southern Pennsylvania, Everett is flanked by the verdant peaks of the Alleghenies. The town acts as a gateway to outdoor adventures in the surrounding mountains. A number of hiking trails crisscross Tenley Park, a few blocks north of Main Street. These range from short, easy loops around the park to more challenging hikes, such as the Mid State Trail, the longest in the state. Once it warms up, you can take a relaxing kayak, canoe, or tube ride down the Juniata River, which bisects the town. Driving along the historic Lincoln Highway is a nice way to see even more of the Alleghenies. The scenic road picks up just north of town and runs lengthwise across the state.
