Downtown Los Angeles: Shopping, Restaurants, and Museums in the Heart of the City

Stroll past the skyscrapers of downtown Los Angeles and you’ll see gleaming modern architecture, neon pagodas, and maybe even a celebrity or two. This 65-block district is incredibly diverse; its easy-to-navigate street grid is divided into multiple quarters, each of which enjoys a distinct cultural identity. In Little Tokyo, you can visit bakeries, shops, and restaurants reflecting the residents’ Japanese-American heritage. The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA is also here; it houses a vast collection of abstract-expressionist, minimalist, pop, and conceptual work by the likes of Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, and Mark Rothko.

The dining and nightlife scene mirrors the area’s diversity. You can find nearly any kind of food here, from Peruvian to Vietnamese to Persian. Nearby, you can visit some of the city’s most popular entertainment venues, including the L.A. Live, which features 6 performance spaces, 19 restaurants, a cineplex, and the Grammy Museum. The Staples Center is right next door; depending on the season, you can watch the Lakers, Clippers, or Kings in action.

Air Conditioning not working; no bell service, run down facility This hotel was chosen for its location near to a business meeting I was attending. There was a loading zone to park my car temporarily, but no bell service and nobody to help with luggage. The front desk had fans going since the AC was not working and the attendant pointed to a cart nearby the reception counter and said I could use that to take my bags from my car up to my room. The room I was assigned had a broken AC unit, and the saving grace for the entire stay was that the young woman on duty at reception immediately upgraded my room to a space where she knew the AC unit was working. It could have been a much more unpleasant experience without her helpfulness. I needed to find a nearby place for dinner (there are a few choices), but the area was uncomfortable to walk in (homeless people asleep on the sidewalk; someone in a building across the street dropping things down on passersby. Fortunately there is a place two doors away (D'Vine Lounge & Bar) that has good food that I could take back to my room.

Excited to see the renovations This is an old boutique hotel. There was exposed wiring, old pipes and overall disrepair but major renovations are in the works. I look forward to seeing how this downtrodden old building can be transformed because the location is wonderful. There are so many places to eat in the neighborhood and walking distance to the Staples Center. The place has a lot of potential.

Definitely not for the business (or any) traveler Stayed here for a last minute business trip as my usual hotel (Westin) was booked. Pros: it's close to the Staples Center, the front desk clerk was helpful Cons: Absolutely everything else Older hotel with exposed wiring; window a/c units; no outlets to plug anything in. Everything was dingy and cracked. Bathroom is less than 4x5 feet, the shower itself is only 18 inches wide by 4 long. Had to shower standing sideways (and I'm 5'3" and 120lbs). Feels and looks like a "live-in" hotel (or a rent by the hour kind of place), not a business or vacation traveler. Wi-Fi kept dropping and was spotty. No amenities. No restaurant/bar onsite, although some within walking distance (during the day only- nighttime would not be recommended). I've stayed in some sketchy hotels before, but this would be rated even below a Motel 6 type place. Would not recommend to anyone, and definitely not at their price point, which is typical DTLA rates of $199+.
