Tempe, Arizona: University Town near Phoenix

If you hear Tempe natives referring to a mountain, there's no need to ask which one. It's the local nickname for Tempe Butte, a steep hill with a 60-foot-tall letter A emblazoned on its south face in honor of Arizona State University. The hill stands just north of the school's campus, which is home to a student body of more than 70,000. Many of them congregate in the brewpubs, shops, and coffeehouses in the Mill Avenue District.

Only a 20-minute drive away, Phoenix offers several acclaimed museums. At the Children's Museum of Phoenix, kids can build forts, measure vegetables in a pintsize market, and help paint a 10-foot-tall robot. The Phoenix Art Museum includes a collection of Thorne rooms—miniature dioramas of ornate interiors kept tidy by a fleet of tiny roombas.

Front desk is great! What a great experience here! Service was impeccable, especially Jonas and Hannah at the front desk. They could not be any more helpful, they go out of their way to help all guests!

Perhaps the worst Westin in the entire portfolio To start, we had to wait for hours after our check-in time, as our room wasn’t ready, and I don’t think it could have gotten worse. At night, we were shocked to discover that this Westin hosts late, rave-style parties on its rooftop bar. This is not one of those events for hotel guests, but it is open to the public for anyone 21 years of age or older. As a result, the party attracted a crowd that was not what you would typically expect to come to a Westin hotel. Due to the unbearable noise, we went to check what was going on, and we couldn’t help but notice that many party attendees wore highly inappropriate and revealing clothing, which made our daughter feel extremely uncomfortable. The following morning, we saw many guests appear intoxicated and dressed inappropriately, standing next to us, waiting for the valet to retrieve our vehicles. When we raised our concerns to the front desk agents, we were told that there was nothing they could do about these parties. At no point, when we checked in or during our stay, did any staff provide us with an explanation about these wild parties. Not even a courtesy notice or heads up. As an ASU graduate with a young family, I love Tempe and its surrounding areas. However, this Westin is badly mismanaged, and the staff showed no willingness to assist when our concerns were raised. Not the Westin standard we expected.

Beware of unexpected hotel charges! I would not stay at The Westin Tempe again, nor would I recommend it. After my closest friends and family members had spent quite a significant amount at this hotel on multiple rooms for a much anticipated bachelorette party, we noticed there were discrepancies in our folios, so we reached out to the front desk manager, Danielle. The manager showed a lack of courtesy and was rude and unprofessional when addressing what would have been a simple issue. She refused to remove the error charges on the folios and wanted to start an argument with us. What a way to ruin the fun and celebrations after a party. We understand there can be unexpected issues or billing errors that need to be fixed; however, there is absolutely NO EXCUSE for initiating an argument using an unprofessional tone and disrespectful comments towards guests. After reaching out to Marriott Bonvoy’s customer service and providing copies of the supporting documentation, the error charges were ultimately reversed. The supervisor at Bonvoy’s customer service apologized to us for the unsatisfactory service provided by the hotel and for having to deal with this after our bachelorette party.
