Tempe, Arizona: University Town near Phoenix

If you hear Tempe natives referring to a mountain, there's no need to ask which one. It's the local nickname for Tempe Butte, a steep hill with a 60-foot-tall letter A emblazoned on its south face in honor of Arizona State University. The hill stands just north of the school's campus, which is home to a student body of more than 70,000. Many of them congregate in the brewpubs, shops, and coffeehouses in the Mill Avenue District.

Only a 20-minute drive away, Phoenix offers several acclaimed museums. At the Children's Museum of Phoenix, kids can build forts, measure vegetables in a pintsize market, and help paint a 10-foot-tall robot. The Phoenix Art Museum includes a collection of Thorne rooms—miniature dioramas of ornate interiors kept tidy by a fleet of tiny roombas.

The Westin - In Name Only The location of this Westin is excellent, as it is literally right next to ASU and the Tempe business district. However, the service and recognition of Bonvoy elite status were extremely poor. While the exterior of the property is well-maintained, I was surprised by the lack of training and the discourteous front desk agents and manager. As an elite member, I expected better service. Just before check-in, I checked the availability of rooms on the Bonvoy appt. To my surprise, an agent informed me that the app did not reflect the latest room availability and that all the upgraded rooms had already been assigned to other guests. So no upgrade for me. During the stay, there was a disturbance from one of the guests next door, who appeared to be having a party for a weekend game. When I requested to switch rooms, I was told that the property was fully booked. When I expressed my dissatisfaction with the manager, Daniela or Danielle, she showed little interest in providing assistance and displayed a lack of empathy. Daniela's or Danielle's response was quite condescending. Instead of offering a solution, she said there was nothing she could do, and I was free to depart early, but there would be no refund. Overall, the service experience fell well short of the level I had anticipated for Westin properties. I would not recommend staying at the Westin Tempe unless you enjoy receiving literally no customer service and having a frustrating experience.

Thanks Hannah! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Raving Review for Hannah at The Westin Tempe! Upon arrival, there was a bit of a mix-up with our room type and card on file. It was honestly a confusing situation. However, every team member we encountered was friendly and accommodating, and I especially want to shout out Hannah for going above and beyond! On the day of check-out, she handled everything with such patience, professionalism, and kindness. She made sure all the details were sorted and that we left feeling completely taken care of. Thank you again, Hannah, for turning a stressful start into a smooth and positive experience. The Westin Tempe is lucky to have you!

Horrendous Customer Service/Leadership Normally, I don't write reviews, but our recent stay at this hotel was so frustrating that I had to share our awful experience. The check-in time is 4 pm but my wife and I waited more than two hours for our room. To make matters worse, I had called the hotel in advance after arriving in Phoenix to confirm that we could check in during the afternoon, as we had a dinner to attend. The service at the front desk was just awful, the staff seemed distracted and uninterested in assisting guests. While we waited for our room after 4 pm, no one from the front desk team offered us a bottle of water. When I checked back and asked about alternative check-in options, we were told that the rooftop bar was open or that we could voluntarily accept a downgraded room. We honestly expected better service than this. I have been a loyal Marriott member for 15 years and stayed more than 170 nights last year, so I expected more from a Westin. Unfortunately, the front desk team at this location simply doesn’t take care of its guests. The company that manages this Westin should be ashamed of the poor service at this property. Take your money somewhere else!
