Tempe, Arizona: University Town near Phoenix

If you hear Tempe natives referring to a mountain, there's no need to ask which one. It's the local nickname for Tempe Butte, a steep hill with a 60-foot-tall letter A emblazoned on its south face in honor of Arizona State University. The hill stands just north of the school's campus, which is home to a student body of more than 70,000. Many of them congregate in the brewpubs, shops, and coffeehouses in the Mill Avenue District.

Only a 20-minute drive away, Phoenix offers several acclaimed museums. At the Children's Museum of Phoenix, kids can build forts, measure vegetables in a pintsize market, and help paint a 10-foot-tall robot. The Phoenix Art Museum includes a collection of Thorne rooms—miniature dioramas of ornate interiors kept tidy by a fleet of tiny roombas.

Great hotel near ASU and Mill Avenue We stayed here on a short trip to Phoenix/Tempe to pick up in-laws at the airport, so we were looking for something comfortable and not very expensive, since we didn't have time to hang out at a resort. This fit the bill perfectly as it had a great price and had some good amenities. The rooftop bar was fun, but we were more focused on the pool. The next morning, we were lucky enough to get one of the cabanas before people started showing and before the misters started. Nice pool but small. Well situated for restaurants, bars, and things to do. Staff was friendly. Bar downstairs in the main restaurant had a far better selection and I got my night cap there. Room was comfortable with a nice big bathroom. Bed was good and the floor was pretty quiet at night. Parking was expensive to valet with some options nearby for self-parking, but we got in late and did not want to deal with it. Would certainly come back if in the area again or if the pricing was this good again. Great deal at $100 for the night.

The most fantastic staff I can’t express enough how fantastic Hannah T. at the front desk was. She was so professional, personalable, kind, and helpful! I stayed and talked with her for 30 minutes just because we were having such a great time! Westin is very lucky to have Hannah to represent the brand! Thank you Hannah!
