Waltham, Massachusetts: Hub of Higher Education and Technology Outside Boston

Dating back to the early 19th century, Waltham has been at the center of Greater Boston’s industry and labor movements. It earned the nickname “Watch City” after the Waltham Watch Company—the first business to make timepieces on an assembly line—opened its factory here in 1854. Visitors can learn about that time-keeping heritage at the Waltham Museum.

Today, this city on the Charles River is best known as a hotbed of research and higher education. Several technology companies, including Raytheon, are headquartered here, and it’s also home to Brandeis University and Bentley University. On the weekend, scores of students pack into the breweries and restaurants on Moody Street downtown.

Pretty disappointing for a Westin For a Westin, this hotel really leaves much to be desired. There are a few good things: the beds are very comfy (though they are doubles, not queens). The buffet breakfast was like a typical hotel buffet that you’d find most places (bacon, sausage, French toast, eggs, toast, oatmeal + toppings), but a bit elevated. The fresh fruit was really nice, and the staff were attentive and friendly. However, the rooms are cramped and pretty old. The bathroom has definite signs of many, many years of poor ventilation (rusty door hinges and sprinkler heads, mildew in the shower grout), and there is a water stain in the ceiling of the bedroom as well. Maintenance is lacking as well: when we first arrived in our room after a long day of travel, the deadbolt didn’t work. The front desk said that they’d have an engineer take a look, but neglected to tell me that it would be the next day. So after waiting a long time and having no one show up, I called again and they were able to find someone to come and fix it so that I could finally go to bed feeling secure. The next day, the toilet lever detached from the tank mechanism. I tried to just put it together again myself, but it kept detaching, so I asked the front desk to send someone to fix it while I was out. 6 hours later I was back and it still wasn’t fixed. Also, there’s no moisturizing cream, and the pumps for shampoo, etc in the shower are mounted way too high for this 5’1” person!

Well Run Venue with a professional staff ! From the moment we arrived, the staff treated us with genuine hospitality and professionalism. The meeting room we rented was absolutely perfect for what we needed. Well prepared, elegant, and comfortable. It was a pleasure working with the Westin team and we truly appreciate how smoothly everything was handled. I would highly recommend this space for anyone looking for a beautiful and well-run venue.

Disgusted! Disgusted! Frequent flyer/traveler and Westin is my go to hotel. By far the nastiest property. Literally fly in after a long flight to pubic hairs on the shower walls! No accommodations because the hotel was booked!
