Waltham, Massachusetts: Hub of Higher Education and Technology Outside Boston

Dating back to the early 19th century, Waltham has been at the center of Greater Boston’s industry and labor movements. It earned the nickname “Watch City” after the Waltham Watch Company—the first business to make timepieces on an assembly line—opened its factory here in 1854. Visitors can learn about that time-keeping heritage at the Waltham Museum.

Today, this city on the Charles River is best known as a hotbed of research and higher education. Several technology companies, including Raytheon, are headquartered here, and it’s also home to Brandeis University and Bentley University. On the weekend, scores of students pack into the breweries and restaurants on Moody Street downtown.

Wouldn’t recommend, wouldn’t come back August 4th, 2025. The hotel and room was clean. We liked the bevy machine in the lobby. However, there was one major issue during our stay. Although the pool and gym were well kept, the singular shower on that level was locked and the restroom was not clean and it did not have toilet paper. When we told staff about this, I couldn’t believe the words that came out of this man’s mouth. He said “There shouldn’t be a bathroom there.” Puzzled, I asked, “So if I need to use the restroom while I’m exercising or swimming, where do I go?” He replied bluntly, “You have to come upstairs.” He apologized but said once again that there shouldn’t be a restroom there. I responded that there should be some sign indicating that. I was also dumbfounded because all hotels and resorts I’ve been to have a shower and restroom open, available, and right next to the gym/fitness center and pool! Perhaps it was just his choice of words, but I found that to be very wrong, such an incorrect way of handling the situation. Hopefully the right changes will be made and that guests can have access to a restroom while they are working out or swimming or they should shut down the pool and fitness center.

This hotel is quite tired in its furnishings and carpeting. The rooms are dark, the bed linens are thin, and the pillows are uncomfortable. The shower curtain was so long that it draped 4 inches into the tub. If I were you, I would look at the nearby Marriott Courtyard or Embassy Suites.

Poor follow-through/communication! Frustrating Sleeping accommodations were fine. However, utilizing hotel for business groups was horrific. I received complaints from my two groups about the food and meeting space. The worse part was the numerous billing errors for my individuals and final group billing. It took over two months to get a resolution after multiple communication to finance team, DOS, GM and hotel owners. Sadly, the GM nor owners never responded.
