Savannah, Georgia: Historical Mansions and a Lively River Walk

Founded in 1733 as Georgia's first town, Savannah is not only one of the most graceful cities in the South but also one the most historic. The old but well-preserved architecture landed it on Forbes’s 2011 list of America's Best Downtowns, and Travel + Leisure dubbed it one of the top cities in the United States and Canada in 2013. The city's 22 famous public squares play host to some famous landmarks, such as antebellum-era houses framed by moss-covered oak trees. Head to Oglethorpe Square to see the Owens-Thomas House, an English Regency–style mansion completed in 1819 that now serves as a museum; tours here depart from the original carriage house and go past its charming English-style parterre garden.

Another relic of Savannah's past, River Street curves for about a mile along Savannah River's south bank. The cobblestone walkways are lined with 100-year-old cotton warehouses that have been converted into antique shops, brewpubs, and galleries. A short walk west of River Street will take you to the City Market, a four-block public meeting space on the edge of downtown.

Making the best of being "snowed in!" Thank you, Ms. Marty! We were here on a day that Savannah experienced what to them is a blizzard! Businesses all over town were closing early, which was a little disappointing. Our stay at the Hotel Indigo was good, and we would like to especially thank Ms. Marty who was working the late night shift at the front desk. When we had an issue, she immediately offered multiple solutions until we found one that worked. While people all over town were shutting down and telling us no, she said YES! Thank you for your friendly and helpful attitude on a night that was kind of crazy around here- you really made our day! Shout out also to our waitress (sorry, didn't get her name) who was working a longer than expected shift and had to spend the night. She was so friendly and pleasant as well as we spent the evening camped out in the restaurant.

Great location, but poor room condition. Great location. We arrived very late and found the main elevator was broken so we had to use another elevator, go to the 7th floor and then go down some stairs to get to the 4th floor. Little weird, but I dealt with it. I got the 2 queen suite with a sofa bed (needed a sofa bed). Pictures on the hotel made it seem like the sofa bed was in another room, separate which is what I wanted, but that wasn’t the case. When pulled out all the way, the sofa bed was almost to the edge of the Queen bed (kinda cramped & we had to find room for 2 square coffee tables that had been in front of the sofa bed)). I had to call downstairs for bedding for the sofa bed at almost midnight. It did come quickly so that was good. I understand in a historical building that road noise might be easier to hear, but one of the windows was SO thin and not insulated that I easily feel the cold air AND could hear so loudly all the people on the street and coming out of the bar across the street. This is all around midnight as we were trying to go to sleep. IF you book this hotel, DO NOT get a room with a street view. The condition of the room was NOT worth what we paid along with the high cost of the valet service (only option). It looked like there had been water damage in the bathroom (the soap and lotion bottles were barely hanging on the wallpaper with a big bubble behind it). The light fixture was peeling from rust. Shoddy rushed paint job in the room with baseboard and ceiling damage from previous guests. Also, the lamp was broken (from a previous guest.) I felt like I was in a motel, not a nicer historic hotel. I do plan to come visit Savannah again, but refuse to stay here again.

Very nice hotel and great location! Absolutely loved our stay! The hotel was very nice and in a perfect location! We loved easily being able to walk anywhere from the hotel with our small children. What made our stay the very best was the staff, particularly Starla. She went above and beyond the entire stay- we will absolutely be staying here again the next time we visit Savannah because of how great our experience with her was!
