Hotel at a Glance: Timber Cove
Since 1963, Timber Cove’s stately A-frame has been perched on a cliff nearly 100 feet above the Pacific Ocean. The 4-star stunner still has its commanding views of the Sonoma coast, and a complete renovation in 2016 blended its midcentury-modern origins with fresh style. Original stone and redwood accents remain in a lobby great room with floor-to-ceiling windows. Guests rooms are outfitted with record players and retro-style Smeg fridges.
- Rooms and suites: Redwood decks overlook nature; Pendleton wool blankets (and fireplaces in some units) offer warmth on chilly evenings.
- Topnotch restaurant: The oceanfront Coast Kitchen pairs seasonal menus with Sonoma Valley wines.
- Wine-tasting room: Guests can book private events in this space, which is anchored by a 13-person table carved from a redwood tree.
- Chill spot: a recreation deck with billiards, table tennis, and a fire pit
- Things to do: picnicking on the lawn and hiking on more than 2 miles of trails spread across 25 acres
- High praise: Condé Nast Traveler named Timber Cove 1 of the world’s top 75 new hotels on its 2017 Hot List.
Sonoma Valley, California: Relaxed Wine Country and Majestic Redwoods
The Sonoma Valley, located about an hour north of San Francisco, is best known for its wine. The mild climate here allows winemakers to grow cool-weather varietals such as pinot noir and chardonnay. But the valley has a varied landscape; some areas are prime for growing hot-weather vines, too.
The 17 miles of country roads that connect the sleepy hamlet of Kenwood to the Carneros appellation lead to more than 40 boutique wineries, most small and family owned. Many are tucked amid oak forests and wildflower meadows. Compared to its neighbor Napa Valley (about 15 miles away), Sonoma feels a little more relaxed and remote: the wineries here are generally more secluded from one another than those in Napa, and tasting rooms tend to be less crowded.
As directed by the State of California, masks will be required when enjoying our common areas and restaurant.
