New Orleans’s French Quarter: Let the Good Times Roll

“Stop thinking of New Orleans as the worst-organized city in the United States,” writes author Dan Baum in Nine Lives, his post-Katrina book. “Start thinking of it as the best-organized city in the Caribbean.” Some folks think there is something distinctly foreign about New Orleans, a place where people’s priorities seem inclined toward enjoying life and relishing the moment at hand. Nothing says it better than the town’s unofficial Cajun creed: “Laissez les bons temps rouler,” or “Let the good times roll.”

Historical buildings with intricate wrought-iron balconies line the narrow streets of New Orleans’s French Quarter. Here, street musicians often fill the air with jazz music, their trombones and tubas swinging back and forth. Just off the Jackson Square park and near the towering St. Louis Cathedral, the legendary Café Du Monde serves beignets under heaping piles of powdered sugar. The nearby Frenchmen Street, just north of the Quarter, provides a slightly less touristy taste of New Orleans nightlife. Some of the city’s most popular live jazz and blues bars dominate this historic two-block district, with each venue hosting world-class musicians nearly every night of the week. And then there’s Bourbon Street, where neon lights advertise frozen cocktails and crowds gather along 13 city blocks.

The place was beautiful! The suite was amazing! It had 2 bathrooms so we were able to be to dinner on time. The staff was excellent. For some reason my reservation was not transferred over to their system. All I had was confirmation that the room had been purchased. Charles, the manager, did not stop until he found my reservation. I will be going back from now on.

Good hotel I really liked the place. It’s nice and walking distance from a lot of restaurants and Bourbon street. The staff are pretty responsive. I think the price is reasonable for the place. The only negative comment I have is that the coffee maker in my room wasn’t working.

Hotel NOT to Intercontinental Hotels Standards My stay at the Intercontinental New Orleans was not up to the typical standard of this 'usually excellent' brand. To be completely transparent, this hotel was not my choice as I was staying there as part of an American Cruise Lines group on the night prior to our cruise departure. First, we waited for more than 20 minutes at check in, due to a front desk that was severely understaffed. We were given a room on the 5th floor, which is what I would call the darkest hotel room I have ever stayed in. Our view was out a window where just a few feet across was another building, leaving the room feeling like you were living in a basement. It was dark even when all of the interior lighting had been turned on. Even worse, we arrived to find that our room had not been completely cleaned, as we found six pillows without any covers all piled on the bedside table, (see attached photo). We called down to tell the management about the situation. They asked several times, are you SURE your beds are not completely made?" as if they did not believe the situation. Finally, after convincing them that we had no pillowcases, they said they would "immediately take care of it." An hour later, (yes, it took them an hour to come by even AFTER confirming that there was a guest concern!) someone came by and suggested we move to another room, but having unpacked we simply asked for the six pillowcases so we didn't have to pack up and move. The beds were comfortable, but the showers were difficult to use and several of the members of our group complained of water that was too hot, and they were not able to adjust it any cooler when they showered. The rest of our stay was average, including dinner at the hotel restaurant, and our catered breakfast. New Orleans has lots of other wonderful hotels in the central business district, any of which provides better service and more comfortable accomodations than this one. Just book one of those if you have the option to do so! My recommendation to American Cruise Lines? They need to select another hotel for passengers departing on their cruises, as this Intercontinental did not meet the standards of their brand.

A Truly Welcoming Experience! l Intercontinental New Orleans By IHG l I'll keep coming back ; From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with a warm smile and outstanding hospitality by Audra at the front desk. Her professionalism, kindness, and genuine care made me feel instantly welcome and at ease after a long day of travel. The entire IHG team went above and beyond to ensure my stay was comfortable—offering thoughtful recommendations, answering all my questions with patience, and making the check-in process smooth and efficient. She even remembered small details from our conversation, which made the experience feel so personal and sincere. It's not often you come across someone who truly embodies what great customer service should be, but Audra absolutely does. Her dedication, positive energy, and attention to detail turned a good stay into a great one. Thank you,Intercontinental New Orleans By IHG for being the one of the highlights of my visit! Because of you, I will definitely return and highly recommend this hotel to others looking for both comfort and exceptional service.
