Hotel at a Glance: Sunset Station

The lights on the Las Vegas Strip are so bright that you can see them from outer space. Here on earth, they’re beacons for fun seekers from far and wide looking to gamble and party into the wee hours. The atmosphere at the Sunset Station resort, which was awarded three diamonds by AAA, is a little quieter, but it has plenty of features to keep you occupied, including a full-service casino, a 5,000-seat amphitheater, and several gourmet restaurants.

  • Newly renovated rooms: New accommodations boast a stylish decor, flat-screen TVs, and lovely views of the surrounding area.
  • Onsite casino: Press your luck at the 24-hour blackjack tables, the race-and-sports book, or at more than 2,000 slot machines—winner of the Las Vegas Review-Journal “best slots” award.
  • Where to eat: There are more than ten onsite restaurants, from fresh seafood at The Oyster Bar to thick-cut steaks at the recently-renovated Sonoma Cellar steakhouse, which boasts a Wine Spectator award-winning wine list.
  • Other activities: The resort is home to an IMAX movie theater, video arcade, 72-lane bowling center, and a large outdoor pool.
  • Live entertainment: On Friday and Saturday nights, guests can enjoy live music acts at Club Madrid and Rosalita’s Cantina. The resort also features an outdoor concert amphitheater – upcoming shows include Randy Houser, Creedence Clearwater Revisited, Billy Currington and Toto.

Henderson, Nevada: Thriving Suburb Close to the Vegas Strip

A Las Vegas suburb, Henderson is conveniently close to the Strip but also far enough away to be an escape from the bustle. Livability.com named it a top family vacation destination, highlighting the city’s culture scene, which includes area art galleries and outdoor symphony concerts. At the Clark County Museum, visitors can trace southern Nevada’s history via a timeline exhibit. The museum campus also has several historic buildings—including a decades-old barn and a wedding chapel—as well as a walk-in mining trail.

Henderson’s shopping scene is another draw: the town features one of the most popular malls off the Strip, Galleria at Sunset. The two-level shopping center houses more than 140 shops and five department stores. But Galleria really stands out because of its Southwestern-themed decor, including fountains, palm trees, and a topiary of animals in the food court. Alternatively, The District at Green Valley Ranch offers an outdoor shopping experience with a pedestrian-friendly promenade that’s lined with boutiques and restaurants.
