Memphis, Tennessee: Blues on Beale Street and Slow-Cooked Barbecue

One of the best ways to experience Memphis is through your stomach. No trip to the city is complete without trying a full plate of Memphis-style barbecue. Ribs can be served wet (brushed with tangy sauce before, during, and after cooking) or, more commonly, dry (rubbed in spices and cooked in a smoker). Memphis has embraced the national food-truck trend, so some of the city’s best cuisine can now be enjoyed on the go.

Another important aspect of Memphis is its storied music scene. Thanks to Sam Phillips’s Sun Studio and the pioneers at Stax Records, the city has played a pivotal role in nearly every genre of American music, including rock, country, soul, and the blues. B. B. King, Elvis Presley, and John Lee Hooker are some of the many musicians who got their start here, and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music chronicles the contributions of several more, including Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, and Sam & Dave. Each night, you can still hear excellent live music on Beale Street—both in the clubs and while strolling down the sidewalk.

Very disappointed in the ambiance. Dark, dim and outdated halls, elevator & room. Smelled dirty. Breakfast was stingy and unappetizing. Hair wads in corners showed room was poorly cleaned. Carpets dirty. Pool was uninviting. Don’t stay here. Pick a nicer place.

This place is family owned and operated and really needs no stars. The groupon should specify that the pricing is for smoking rooms, the beds are trash and had all of our backs screaming. The pillows were the kicker, flatout flat &shameful and they need to do better. The carpet on the walls in the elevator is super tacky.Front desk was not warm or welcoming ,they were robotiic and rushed.

The online pictures make this place look amazing but I should have known from the price that wouldn’t be the case. Very dirty, old soap bar left from the people before. Asked for more than 3 pillows for the king size bed and was told housekeeping was off so no. Just a dirty gross hotel in a not great area. Spend more and stay more downtown

The front desk gentleman was the best! The hotel lobby was nicely decorated. It looks like they are still in the middle of remodeling. The room seemed a bit outdated or mix-matched, but it was super clean! For the price it was well worth the stay. I'd stay there again while passing through town.
