Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas and Red Rock Canyon

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

Awesome Stay! In town for a concert we selected this hotel as it was off the strip and less costly. We were a family of four adults and the room was impressive as it was quite spacious. The room consisted of two full-size beds, a living room with a nice sized couch, armchair, office chair/desk and a dining table, TV. There was a kitchenette with fridge and coffee maker (Keurig) and wet bar but no microwave (but we did see several microwaves locked up in the maids’ closet at end of hall). The bathroom consisted of a square-shaped size shower (single person size), a toilet, bathtub and vanity. The room was carpeted (as opposed to a wooden or linoleum floor). They had a nice pool, bar and breakfast restaurant on site, too. The main pool had loud punk music being piped in but the nearby lap pool did not. They had poolside drink service, too. We all loved the small scale of the resort (three stories) and the ability to park close to your room. One evening we walked to the Hotel Cosmopolitan (30 minutes) passing Paris-Las Vegas, Planet Hollywood and Bellagio along the strip. The hotel staff was very accommodating, especially Shaun, the manager at check out. We would definitely come back here again.

VERY DISAPPOINTED We arrived tired in the evening after a long day of travel. Check in was perfect and Noah was friendly and helpful The room assigned was removed from the parking areas so relatively quiet We retired early due to the travel and time difference w/o checking out the room We awoke to find that our coffee maker was broken, we next noticed the dead bolt doesn't work on our door, we also found out the vault was already locked and un-usable. We called for service before leaving the htel to report these things to front desk. She stated they would send someone out to fix these things while we were out exploring. While speaking with the operator I asked where the complimentary water bottle was. She stated only (casino) VIPs were given complimentary water bottles. RME gasp. 9 hours later after returning to the room we found NOTHING had been touched. It was dinner time and our show was to follow - on the way to the dnner we again reported these issues to the front desk . . . instead of making an effort to fix right away the assistance mgr on duty tried to accuse use of not reporting these things in a timely manner. We were comped a 3rd of the over priced dinner in the hotel's restaurant which wasn't worth the 3rd let alone the full price. Overall, I'd recommend buyer beware at this hotel - not terrible but certainly DOES NOT meet expectations or norms for service and accomodation.
