Nestled near Unicoi Lake, the lodge’s spacious accommodations are secluded amid more than 1,000 acres of protected wilderness.

An extensive network of hiking trails weaves across the mountain landscape; there’s a meandering loop around the lakefront and a white-knuckle mountain-biking path. Helen, Georgia: Replica Bavarian Village Surrounded by the Appalachians

In 1968, the townspeople of Helen, Georgia—a struggling sawmill town in the Blue Ridge Mountains—hatched a dramatic plan to reinvigorate the economy and boost tourism. Led by local business owners and artists, Helen adopted a German identity, complete with cobblestone alleys, timber-frame cottages, and Old-World towers. Ever since, the town has thrived as a Bavarian-style village, now welcoming nearly two million visitors a year. Several festivals take place in the town every year, most notably a hot-air balloon race, a German-style Mardi Gras, and an eight-week-long Oktoberfest.

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Helen is also home to some incredible countryside scenery. Unicoi State Park and Lodge contains trout streams, mountain-biking trails, and a freshwater lake. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail passes nearby, and the Anna Ruby Falls drop off in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. The area’s natural setting lends itself to scenic outdoor activities, including tubing down the Chattahoochee River.

Horrible stay What can I say about our stay at UNICOI STATE PARK AND LODGE? After driving for hours through what felt endless winding roads and exploring the downtown shops, we were ready to relax and rest at the lodge. What we never expected was our uninvited guests. We have traveled across the United States, The Caribbean and Europe extensively and I have to admit, this was a first. When we got to our room, I noticed a ladybug on the bed. Immediately I was reminded that ladybugs are supposed to bring good luck and I was directed to set it free outside. When I got back from the expedition, there was another, almost in the same spot on the bed. I freed that one too. We finished disembarking, and getting comfortable when I noticed a few more. I grabbed a cup and started collecting and setting them free. I'm sure a few guests were concerned why this big guy keeps coming out to the yard in pajamas at 45 degrees. By the fifth trip, I noticed a stinkbug making his way to the light. That's when we decided to call the front desk and ask if this was common and what can they do about it? At first they wouldn't answer the phone but eventually someone said that they will be sending maintenance to spray. I layed down in bed watching the ladybugs dance and then I panic imagining someone spraying DDT or TNT in the room. We waited for an hour and the maintenance lady showed up with a vacuum. She looked up, wasn't surprised, and said, "I'll be back" and left. A few minutes later, she came back with a Swiffer mop stick. I showed her that while she was away, I was able to capture 3 more, she looked at me and said that after the government airplanes dropped them to help with the crops, they are everywhere. She called up the office and said that there wasn't much she could do since there were so many up high in the ceiling. She also said that the hotel was at full capacity and she didn't think there was much they could do for us. We went to the reception and asked them if they could find another room since ours had an infestation, the gentleman remembered that there was an extra room and immediately gave us a set of keys. We were very grateful that they were able to get us another room. In the new room, we encountered another batch of ladybugs and from the edge of the ceiling a larger bug started making his presence known, this was a large black cockroach. I tried to kill or disperse the bug but instead it managed to sneak into a cravice between the roof and the wall. By this time, we were too tired to leave, too dark, and cold to find another hotel. I have lost track of how many ladybugs I flushed. The ladybugs kept appearing and dancing, while the roach and I kept a staring contest for rest of the night. Eventually, I lost the contest, and shortly after, a ladybug congratulated me by kissing me on the face in the middle of the night.

Excellent customer service at the front desk and in the restaurants. This lodge was perfect for a much needed, quiet, peaceful, getaway from Atlanta for a few days! Thankfully, I bring my own pillow whenever I travel, as the ones provided here were very poor quality. However, the mattress was very plush, thick and comfortable. Since I was there during some of the coldest days of the winter thus far (Dec. 29 - 31), a nice thick, extra blanket would have been wonderful, as I like to sleep with very little heat on. Room and bathroom were very clean, as well.

Okay if you need a place to stay in the area It was okay... Not enough pillows, towels or washcloths, and I texted the front desk and no one responded to it after telling me that I could and they would reply quickly. Had to walk to the front desk where the clerk was on her phone but no reply to my text. OK Coffee in the room was terrible and minimal tv stations. For the price nothing is included as far as breakfast. If in Helen area, I guess it's worth the stay over if you don't want to stay on Main Street ( which is a mess) . Won't be back.
