Helen, Georgia: Replica Bavarian Village Surrounded by the Appalachians

In 1968, the townspeople of Helen, Georgia—a struggling sawmill town in the Blue Ridge Mountains—hatched a dramatic plan to reinvigorate the economy and boost tourism. Led by local business owners and artists, Helen adopted a German identity, complete with cobblestone alleys, timber-frame cottages, and Old-World towers. Ever since, the town has thrived as a Bavarian-style village, now welcoming nearly two million visitors a year. Several festivals take place in the town every year, most notably a hot-air balloon race, a German-style Mardi Gras, and an eight-week-long Oktoberfest.

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Helen is also home to some incredible countryside scenery. Unicoi State Park and Lodge contains trout streams, mountain-biking trails, and a freshwater lake. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail passes nearby, and the Anna Ruby Falls drop off in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. The area’s natural setting lends itself to scenic outdoor activities, including tubing down the Chattahoochee River.

Stay in Helen, not here. The check-in was long due to one person working. (I was 12th in line) No big deal, just sit and wait. The next day, I needed a ride from the cabin to the business meeting at the Lodge. "The shuttle driver doesn't come in until 10 am, and then I would have to ask him." So, I had to walk to the lodge for my meeting. Quite a hike in dress shoes. This was for the week, due to meetings at 9 am every day. The noise in the cabin is extremely loud. The acorns falling on the tin roof sound like hand grenades at 2 am. The 4-wheelers, motorcycles, and other ATV vehicles driving throughout the night are so loud that they sound like they are coming through your cabin. Our business meeting did not end until 12:00 pm, but the check-out is at 11 am. When I explained the time difference in checkout and the business time ending, I asked for a checkout at 12, but I was denied. So, my dog and spouse had to be out by 11 am and sit in the parking lot. I would not stay here again. The staff is not accommodating to your needs, as it is more about making sure they can keep it booked.

Their Cancellation is our Problem to fix We booked the Unicoi Lodge nine months in advance. At 6:06 PM on Friday—less than 24 hours before check-in—we received an email canceling our Saturday reservation. No alternative accommodation. No assistance. Just cancellation. We were left scrambling for a hotel room during Oktoberfest weekend. The result was predictable: the only available room was over an hour away at nearly double the cost. While we understand that safety issues can arise unexpectedly, the hotel had a responsibility to provide solutions, not just cancellations. When a business accepts a booking nine months out, guests rely on that commitment—especially for a high-demand event where last-minute alternatives are impossible to find. What we needed: Proactive assistance securing comparable accommodation, or at minimum, coverage of the price difference caused by their last-minute cancellation. What we received: An email and a problem that became ours to solve. Safety comes first—we get that. But leaving guests stranded without support isn’t an acceptable response to an uncontrollable situation. It’s how you handle the crisis that defines your service. So bottom line: just because you have a booking don’t expect it to be honoured

Nice Room but the Palmetto/Roaches were in Full Effect!!!! Hate to start off negative because the total trip overall was ok but there are a few things they really need to address. 1. Palmetto bugs aka roaches were in full effect, felt so uncomfortable sleeping at night. Changed rooms 3x and not because of the bugs (that was extra) we changed due to major problems in each room where we couldn't stay and the staff recommended, we move. They reduced the rate however we still slept with one eye open and shook our clothes before packing up. Yuk!!! 2. Lodge has a "Shining" vibe. A little creepy. Time for a complete renovation/update for rooms and the entire compound. Now on positive note. Great view, location, staff super nice and the breakfast decent. I would not return however until I've read, they've completed a major overhaul on the Lodge.
