San Juan, Puerto Rico: Cosmopolitan City with Rich Spanish Heritage and Excellent Surfing and Fishing

Located along the northeastern coast of Puerto Rico, San Juan is a city of superlatives: it is the largest city on the island, one of the oldest colonial cities that lies on US territory, and it operates one of the busiest seaports in the world. And though San Juan is certainly modern, it also preserves quite a bit of its Spanish heritage.

At the mouth of the San Juan Bay, you'll find the blue cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, which are lined with museums, churches, and military forts dating back to the 16th century. The San Juan National Historic Site features old but well-preserved buildings such as El Morro, a castle-like fortress built to defend the city from seaborne enemies and serve as a party house whenever the mayor went out of town.

Strong waves and constant winds keep windsurfers and kiteboarders busy in San Juan, and sailboats ring the marinas year-round. But the island might be best known for its deep-sea fishing. Numerous charter boats can take you out to fish for tarpon, blue marlin, and mahi-mahi.

Okay Stay The Verdanza Hotel was great when we entered the lobby. As we entered the room, it was outdated along with the furniture and decor. In addition, we faced several incidents of being ignored and attributed it to colorism. As professionals and experienced travelers, there were times we were served last or not even acknowledged while European travelers received service so much that we walked across the street to the Embassy Suites to dine for breakfast and dinner. Belinda at the Embassy is amazing! We had such a riveting experience at Verdanza that we shared it with Samuel who then went above and beyond his job to make us feel seen. In addition, I was showering one night and during my shower the lights went completely out. I stepped out the shower to check on the lights and fell. I hurt my arm and wrist. My travel partner called the front desk, they sent maintenance to flip on the lights that went out again. Finally, a hotel representative came to check on me. I files a report about my fall and that I hurt my arm and wrist. No representative nor corporate manager followed up with me. Now, I am home in the states with a sore wrist, and still, no follow up from corporate. Overall, the ladies at the front desk, the heavy set guy at the coffee shop, the young guy who works Tuesdays at the bar, and Samuel were awesome. My experience with other team members in the restaurant and hotel were not as welcoming as they tend to cater to lighter complexion customers, in my opinion.

Poor experience for the price we paid Horrible experience! We spent one night here and it was a very unpleasant one. I could hear noise from the other room and the mattress, bathroom accessories and TVs everything seem outdated. Unsure why this is called a 3 star hotel, feels like a motel tbh _

Verdanza experience Nice hotel with good accommodation. The breakfast buffet is a go getter _...great pool byw! The beach is only about a block away and very close to the strip. The staff at Verdanza was totally incredibly nice! We really enjoyed our trip there!

Run This hotel is terrible. The lobby has been remodeled but the rest of the hotel is trash. There’s no direct access to a pool. You have to take a shuttle that doesn’t run all day. The rooms are old and gross. Housekeeping wouldn’t take dirty towels

Terrible I had a reservation and when I went to check in they said that they could not honor it. I showed them the paid receipt and they stayed rooms were not available as it was a ‘glitch’. Horrible! Wasted 4 hours trying to book another hotel. Not acceptable!
