Western Puerto Rico: Surf, Sun, and Spanish Influence

Located just east of the Dominican Republic, the US commonwealth of Puerto Rico attracts mainland Americans looking for an exotic Caribbean destination without the need for a passport. Puerto Rico’s small size (it’s about as large as Connecticut) makes it possible to see the whole territory in one trip, so a trip to western Puerto Rico is well worth the time. The west’s unofficial capital is Mayagüez, which sits at the center on the island’s western coast. Here, much life revolves around the Plaza Colon, a bustling town square whose broad avenues and quaint cafes are watched over by the Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. While you’re here, be sure to sample the local mangoes; the city has the island’s largest concentration of the trees.

About 30 miles north of Mayagüez, you’ll find the beachside community of Isabela. Known as the “Garden of the Northwest,” the town is renowned for the lush tropical wildflowers that fill their air with their perfume. Isabela sites just outside the Guajataca Forest Reserve, whose trails and trees conceal natural wonders such as the mist-filled Cave of the Winds. The town’s shoreline also boasts plenty of thundering surf, including Jacinto’s Well, a blowhole that’s the subject of local myths. One things that’s definitely not a myth: the town’s renowned cheese, which is wrapped in banana leaves according to traditional preparations.

Beautiful property and great accommodations. The restaurants view of the ocean is priceless. One small problem that we had was that the first night the smoke detector on one of the empty adjacent rooms was beeping all night and the front desk did not answer our calls around 9:30 pm to try to correct the problem so we had a bad night sleep. Overall great place and will definitely go back to visit.

Customer service sucked. At check-in, I had to ask the girl to return my bank card twice. She couldn't find it; thank goodness I watched her so I could TELL her where she left it. Distracted, flustered, scatter-brained. They offer free use of snorkels/masks/fins. We signed them out, drove one hour away to use them, discovered one of the fins was broken and had to rent fins anyway. When I told the front desk about the faulty equipment, no apologies, just a "Thanks for pointing that out." I asked for extra coffee pucks thinking it would be included (it was complimentary at the place we spent 4 nights at prior to this place). I was charged $55.76 for 20 extra coffee pucks (we only received a dozen, but I got charged an EXORBITANT FEE for more than I actually received). We found live cockroaches in the kitchen on our last night and had to throw away all the food on the counter. We left our bags in the garage when we got home and brought in one load of laundry at a time so we wouldn't introduce cockroaches into our home. I told the front desk about it at checkout and got "Was it dead? That shouldn't happen. How big was it? really??? It was flippin HUGE! We exterminate every year." This place looks really nice from the exterior. The location and setting are beautiful. The Eclipse Restaurant onsite was great. However, I would NOT recommend staying there. Go to Copa Marina Beach Resort & Spa in Guanica instead. THEY'RE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
