Breckenridge, Colorado: Former Mining Town with Famous Mountain Resort
Like many Colorado towns, Breckenridge started out as a mining town in the 19th century. Breckenridge remained prosperous longer than many of its neighbors. It was here, in fact, that miners found the largest gold nugget ever unearthed in Colorado. The 13.5-pound behemoth, known as “Tom’s Baby,” is currently on display at the Colorado History Museum in Denver.
When the mines dried up, in came the skiers. Breckenridge Ski Resort, which opened in 1961, today encompasses five peaks and nearly 3,000 skiable acres. If you’re visiting in warmer weather, there’s still plenty to do. Head to downtown Breckenridge, where the quaint Main Street is lined with carefully preserved Victorian-era buildings that now house art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants.
