Hotel at a Glance: Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites

John F. Kennedy, Howard Hughes, and a young Jacqueline Bouvier have all been guests at the Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites. The hotel, which first opened its doors as the Colonial Inn in 1911, changed owners in 2009 and re-opened two years later, on its 100th anniversary, as the Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites. It enjoys a location in the middle of downtown Edgartown, surrounded by shops, upscale restaurants, and the harbor.

  • Fresh seafood and modern Italian cuisine are on the menu at Chesca's.
  • Browse diverse art work on display in the Eisenhauer Gallery, located inside the hotel.

Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts: Jaws, Beaches, and Whaling History

Ask a Massachusetts resident where he or she is vacationing on any given weekend in the summer, and the answer will likely be one of two places: the Cape or the islands. The Cape, of course, refers to Cape Cod, the arm-shaped peninsula that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. And the islands are Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, two dots in the sea just south of the Cape. Both are known for their typically New England downtowns, shingle-sided seafood shacks, and picturesque beaches.

Edgartown, the largest city on Martha’s Vineyard, was one of America’s main whaling ports in the early 1800s, when ships from all over the world docked in its protected harbor. During this era, ship captains built “gingerbread” mansions overlooking the harbor; these beautifully grand houses are still a major tourist draw today. Another claim to flaim: Steven Spielberg filmed the movie Jaws here, showcasing the town’s quaint resort qualities, such as compact shopping districts and narrow streets best accessed by bicycle.

Head to famous South Beach for a day of tanning and splashing, or visit one of the island’s five lighthouses for sweeping ocean views and sunset tours. Gay Head Light in Aquinnah, on the isle’s western tip, is most popular at sundown. There’s also Chappaquiddick Island, where you can travel by ferry to fish for bluefish and striped bass or check out the numerous wildlife preserves and lovely, uncrowded beaches.
