Hotel at a Glance: Warwick Allerton - Chicago

As night falls on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue, the "Tip Top Tap" sign illuminates the Warwick Allerton - Chicago's Italian Renaissance-style façade. The red neon sign is the last vestige of the hotel's 23rd-floor penthouse lounge, a swanky nightclub once frequented by Hollywood A-listers. A recent $60 million renovation has restored the original 1920s brickwork and updated the interior for the 21st century.

  • Landmark status: The Allerton is an official Chicago landmark.
  • Five-minute walk to Water Tower Place, the John Hancock Center, and the Museum of Contemporary Art
  • Distinctive rooms: The hotel’s historical floor plan gives each of the guest rooms a unique layout, though they all feature marble bathrooms, upholstered headboards, and flat-screen TVs.
  • The press says: "If you want to stay in a place in the middle of it all, this is a very good choice." — Fodor's
  • Enjoy afternoon tea or glasses of bubbly at the Tip Top Tap Ballroom; contact Jonathan at for details on discounted rates.

Chicago's Magnificent Mile: Upscale Boutiques and Historic Architecture

On Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, landmark skyscrapers such as the John Hancock Center and the Wrigley Building tower over the city's liveliest retail corridor. In total, this stretch of high-end real estate houses some 460 stores, ranging from exclusive designers such as Armani and Chanel to beloved brands including Apple, American Girl, and Gap. Double-decker buses and horse-drawn carriages circle the Chicago Water Tower, a limestone icon that survived the Great Chicago Fire, and droves of shoppers navigate eight levels of boutiques and cafés at the nearby Water Tower Place.

Lake Shore Drive runs two blocks east of Michigan Avenue. Travel + Leisure called this stretch “the greatest architecture road on earth” thanks to the superstar skyscrapers lined up along the lakefront. Looming above them all, of course, is the Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower)—the tallest building in North America. Runners, cyclists, and runaway lawnmowers travel the adjoining Lakefront Trail throughout the year. A mile and a half north, crowds gather at North Avenue Beach during the summer to people watch, play volleyball, and listen to live music at beachfront bars. You can get to the beach (and practically anywhere else in the city) using Chicago's extensive public transportation system.

The woman checking us in and the woman next to her were super unfriendly and took forever to get us checked in. Meanwhile, the gentleman working next to her was kind as can be and quickly checked his guests in! The room was small, but the bathroom was made for children and grimy looking. Felt fine since we only stayed one night but I would not go back.

I don't understand how this is a 4 star hotel, should be a 3. Our air conditioning only worked in one of the rooms and mold in the bathroom. When we first went to check in the concierge was rude and said we didn't have a reservation. For 30 minutes I was nearly in tears until I tried a different lady at concierge and she found it right away.

I booked months in advance. When we arrived, I was told that I could not check in because my reservation wasn't until July. I showed my digital reservation to the clerk. The clerk had to double check with Groupon. After 30 minutes she verified my information. They also held the entire amount I prepaid instead of the 60 they stated. On the upside: the room was clean and pillows were comfy.

This is the worst hotel I ever stayed in. I checked the mattresses for bed bugs and they were dirty. I asked to switch rooms & they downgraded my room. The mattresses were cleaner but still not clean so we called the front desk. They sent head of security to tell us they didn’t have bed bugs even though they told us housekeeping would have to confirm. We found clumps of hair in the “clean” towels.
