Hotel at a Glance: Water's Edge Resort & Spa

The Water's Edge Resort & Spa has given summertime visitors access to Westbrook's coastline for over a hundred years. The property began as a summer beach cottage for Adolf and Jennie Knothe, and has since transformed into a property worthy of the word "resort." Guests have access to resort-style amenities, from indoor and outdoor pools to live entertainment at the resort's seasonal outdoor bar.

  • Take a walk along the beach, and don't forget to snap a few pictures of the picturesque coastline.
  • Relax in the spa, complete with a sauna and a steam room; specialists offer soothing massages and facials (additional fees apply).
  • Grab a bite at one of the five restaurants, such as Dattilo Fine Italian or the seasonal outdoor Sunset Bar & Grill.
  • Put your feet up in a relaxing room decked out in beachy New England–style decor—think sandy tones punctuated by sea-blue hues.
  • Go shopping within the wedding-focused Shops at Water’s Edge, and check out bridal boutiques, a hair salon, and more.

Westbrook, Connecticut: Idyllic Seafaring Town with All-American Town Center

Situated just west of the spot where the Connecticut River meets Long Island Sound, Westbrook has nurtured a rich seafaring and fishing tradition for centuries. The neighboring town’s most famous resident, however, was a movie star—Katharine Hepburn, who built a sprawling home in Old Saybrook with views of the water and the lighthouse. According to locals, Hepburn swam in the sound nearly every day, well into her 80s, even when the beach was covered in snow.

One of the oldest towns on the Connecticut Shoreline, Westbrook has all the trappings of a small New England village: sailboats bobbing in the harbor, clapboard homes, and a quaint town center lined with cafés, antique shops, and churches. You’re liable to see couples paddling kayaks and canoes around the coves. Visitors looking for a louder scene can hit the tables at the Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos, both located less than 40 minutes away.

DO NOT stay in room 210!!! Actually don't bother staying at all. In a resort this large it's ridiculous a room like this needs to be used. Room 210 is on the staircase landing directly off the main lobby. When I say directly off the lobby, I mean I could sit at the top of the staircase (3 feet from the room's door) and I be in direct eye contact of the front desk. This might not be so bad if the bar/lounge and it's over amplified (cheesy ) live music was not directly off the lobby also. Besides the open design of the lobby and the bar, every loud drunk person passed through the lobby to leave the building. Lots of screeching. The amount of solutions to make this design flaw tolerable are obviously beyond this place as was a sincere response from the front desk upon checking out. Taciturn would have been a generous term to discribe the young lady checking us out. Besides the lack of sleep we were also treated to no water on Sunday morning. No shower, no teeth brushing. The ability to sleep and a shower are the two things one would consider fundemental at any hotel. Don't count on them here. To be fair, I will say it's clean and the staff (other than the sullen front desk clerk) was nice. The food was OK...no more or less than I would expect from conference dining. Not anything you would seek out. The view is nice but don't be deceived when it comes to the beach. It's very limited. What you see in the photo is it. You can't walk east or west of the resort's boundry as the beach in front of the neighboring properties is private.

Outstanding visit!!! I'll be back soon! Waters Edge exceeded my every expectation on my last visit. I've stayed here before and wasn't impressed. However, this visit I booked a room waterfront and it was spectacular!!! Updated and beautiful with a full kitchen, gas stove and wine cooler. It had 2 bedrooms and lots of room. My daughter and grandchildren met me here, so I asked the front desk for a crib. Even the crib was beautiful and made from a quality wood. We had dinner at the resteraunt which was amazing. The view was amazing, the food was amazing, the service was amazing. I'll definetely be back and look forward to bringing my family back here to spend time too!
