The staff were most helpful. I had grabbed the wrong charger when I packed for my headphones and the front desk gave me a loaner charger. The staff went above and beyond what was necessary, all to ensure you enjoyed your stay. The food at breakfast was great with surprise hits that everyone enjoyed. Guests chatted amongst themselves briefly asking if people had tried the flute glass yogurt and fruit option. The sauna barrels were hit along with the hot tub. I didn't see anyone plunge into the pool but it was an option. Most people traveled from the hot tub to the sauna barrels and back. The guest robes were long and thick, so when walking outside to the hot tub you didn't feel the cold too much but were ready to get into the hot tub. It was a great and relaxing get away. Plus saw lots of deer from the breakfast dining room window. I used the gym four times and it had everything you could need. Generally I was the only person in the gym but it is set up well that if there were two or three more people in the gym you would all be able to get in your workout. However, lots of areas to walk and enjoy the outdoors.

Great experience. Although there was a bit of an issue with them running out of multiple breakfast items since the hotel was sold out, the staff were very helpful. The property itself is very nice and there's lots to do even in a winterstorm like the one during family day weekend. Would come back again.

Exceptional Dining a Highlight We stayed recently for four nights at the hotel in a water view room with a balcony and a fantastic close up view of the lake. Check-in was fairly smooth with a small issue being addressed by Kelly at the front desk. It was hot and the lobby bar was very welcoming and Daniel the bartender an excellent host and as it turned out an excellent mixologist. The Pub offers more casual fare and has a nice patio. The breakfast buffet is pretty expansive but could use a few more change ups to the scrambled eggs. That happened once in the 4 days. They could also use better supervision of the plate supply and the status of the coffee urn. The crowning jewel of the resort however is the Rousseau dining room. The food was 5 star with exceptional sushi over lunch, and creative and beautifully prepared and presented dinner items in the evening. The desserts are works of art and delicious. Custom cocktails are imaginatively presented and truly an experience. There are a few minor things the new owners (2023) could address about the rooms with some of the furniture tired and banged up but our room had new beds and lovely furniture on the balcony so those concerns can be hopefully addressed. The pool is quite nice but not fantastic from an accessibility point of view as the stairs are wide and flat and the hand rail not quite long enough. A standard pool ladder would easily fix this. Room rates for high summer were reasonable but they should probably just fold in the daily resort fee. Overall I would recommend the Hotel and would stay again.

An Elegant Journey Back In Time My family and I had the great pleasure of spending part of our summer holidays at Windermere House this July, and it was everything we hoped it would be. This historic resort, originally built in 1870, carries a rich legacy. Although it tragically burned down in 1996 during the filming of a movie, it was impressively rebuilt within a year to match the original design. Since then, it has undergone renovations multiple times. What you get is the best of both worlds: timeless charm with all the modern comforts. Staying here truly feels like stepping into a bygone era, yet nothing feels outdated or tired. Sitting out on the front lawn, it’s easy to imagine generations of guests who’ve relaxed in those same Muskoka chairs overlooking the lake for over 150 years. Our room was spacious, spotless, and very comfortable. The bathroom was modern and clean, with only two minor drawbacks: only one sink and a shower head with a rather thin stream. Still, it functioned well and didn’t detract from the overall experience. There's good, free wi-fi throughout the hotel and outside. The hotel's shared spaces, including the elegant lobby, the cozy lobby bar, the upscale Russo restaurant, and the more casual downstairs Windermere Pub, are all beautifully designed. They strike the right balance between classic country resort and stylish modern retreat. We enjoyed an exceptional dinner at Russo Restaurant; both the food and service were top-notch. The Windermere Pub offers a more relaxed and affordable option, with equally great service and a lovely outdoor patio. The lobby bar was perfect for a casual drink or light snack, echoing the resort’s old-world character with updated elegance. Breakfast was a real standout. The buffet offered an abundant spread: fresh fruit, muffins, smoked salmon, cheeses, yogurt, cold cereals, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, French toast, and delicious seasoned breakfast potatoes. It’s available from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. most days. One morning, the French toast arrived a bit late, but when it did, it was absolutely worth the wait. Throughout our stay, the staff were consistently warm, friendly, and attentive. We also spent a lot of time at the pool area, which was beautifully laid out with plenty of Muskoka chairs, loungers, and shaded spots. It’s the kind of place where you lose track of time. While I didn’t try them myself, the three large barrel saunas beside the pool looked fantastic. There’s no shortage of things to do here. There's complimentary access to canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards on the lake. There’s also a tennis court, and pickleball equipment, our first time playing, and it was a blast. The basketball stand was a bit low and needed to be straightened, but otherwise, it worked well. The outdoor fire pit and seating area were terrific - very warm and cozy. One of our favourite spots was the grand outdoor veranda. Although much of it is used for restaurant seating, there are generous sections with deep, comfortable chairs perfect for reading, relaxing, or simply gazing out at the lake. Some of our most peaceful and memorable hours were spent there. The Windermere House is not a budget option; expect to pay upwards of $500 per night in peak season, but it delivers excellent value for the experience. It’s not just a stay; it’s a slice of Canadian history wrapped in quiet luxury. We look forward to coming back in future summers.
