Indio, California: The City of Festivals in the Desert

Stagecoach Festival. Indio International Tamale Festival. Coachella. These are a just a few of the many events that come through Indio, lending credence to its title as "The City of Festivals." Coachella is probably the best known of these events, attracting more than 100,000 visitors over a two-weekend span that Rolling Stone has called one of the best American rock festivals. Music lovers flock to the desert to hear the latest and greatest in alternative rock and hip hop, as well as to take in large, sculptural art sprinkled across the grounds. This artistic vibe leaks out onto the streets of Indio in the form of Southwest-inspired wall murals.

Located about 20 miles from Indio, Palm Springs is an oasis of outdoor recreation and old Hollywood glamour. Once the stomping grounds of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and the Rat Pack, the town still attracts A-list vacationers today. A stroll through the Movie Colony—which had its heyday between the 1930s and 1960s—will take you past the former homes of Dean Martin, Bob Hope, and Marilyn Monroe.

The sun shines more than 300 days a year in Palm Springs, which means you can play a round of golf or hike in the nearby Agua Caliente Indian Canyons no matter the season. It’s worth taking a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, whose cars rotate 360 degrees as they carry passengers to Mount San Jacinto’s Mountain Station, located 8,516 feet above sea level. About 40 miles northeast is the nearly 800,000-acre Joshua Tree National Park, which spans parts of the Colorado and Mojave Deserts. Hit one of the 12 nature trails for a chance to see desert bighorn sheep, snakes, and black-tailed jackrabbits.

A bit disappointed Upon arrival, customer service was amazing. Our room was ready and we settled in. After arriving couple hours into arrival, we noticed Cheerios all over the carpet on the side of the couch. So we picked them up. The next morning, there was absolutely no hot water in the kitchen sink, and the kitchen floor was sticky all over in front of the island (like something had spilled and not been cleaned up). As I prepared breakfast, I stated pulling dishes out of the cabinet and the two top dishes had food particles stuck on them (looked like eggs and something green). I got down to the last plate and pulled it out. It was completely loaded with what looked like bacon grease. Needless to say, we were very disgusted. Also, had to have maintenance come to the room as our remote wasn’t working and it needed batteries. The next night, I still couldn’t get the tv to turn on and called maintenance again and, come to find out, we had an old remote that wasn’t comparable with the television and had to have it replaced. It was frustrating on many levels. The guests above our room kept us up all night until 4 am every single morning. After 3 nights of no sleep, I co texted the front desk and asked them to kindly ask the guests above to shut the craziness down by 1 am. For whatever reason, the noise continued and I went 5 days with the worst sleep I’ve ever had at a resort. And I tried napping during the day, but it was just constant noise from upstairs. We have stayed at this resort many times over the past 10 years. It had become a travel destination for us. We have never experienced anything like this. On our second to last day, we visited the lazy river. Caleb was the lifeguard on duty. Now, we’ve been going to the lazy river at least twice a day since arriving. We had a wonderful experience with the staff on duty. We appreciated all of the newly implemented rules and it was truly relaxing. However, the morning Caleb was on duty (fist time never saw him all week), he was allowing kids to swim with goggles, splash everyone, race by everyone and knocking into them and then wouldn’t allow any adults to use the raft that you sit in versus the round raft. I basically had to give him a rundown of my health history just to get a raft out of the storage unit so that I could be more comfortable. I felt it was a violation of my privacy and that I had to explain myself, not only to him, but in front of of other guests. It was embarrassing.

End of school year relaxation Wanted warm weather and relaxation for my end of the school year trip. I got it!! I loved the lazy river! The grills were cleaned each morning. The lazy river has a River walk first thing every morning. The life guards were great. I'm glad they keep an eye on unused tubes when people are waiting to float. The unit was clean and location was perfect.
