Downtown Boston: Revolution-Era Landmarks and Modern Skyscrapers

Downtown Boston is home to one of the country’s wackiest city layouts. Its colonial-village lanes converge, split, and take hairpin turns, creating a maze of cobblestone that, though frustrating for drivers, makes for a fun walking experience. If you’re visiting for the first time, the best way to navigate the area is to follow the 2.5-mile-long Freedom Trail, which takes you past 16 historical landmarks, including Paul Revere's home, Old North Church (of “One if by land, two if by sea” fame), and Faneuil Hall. You can use Boston public transportation to explore the city if you tire of walking.

Since the area is also the city’s financial district, centuries-old fixtures share sidewalk space with modern 40-story office towers. You’ll find suit-clad professionals grabbing lunch on Washington Street, which is lined with street vendors and flower shops. Downtown is also where you’ll find several of the city’s quirkier neighborhoods, such as the Leather District. With its rustic warehouses, the neighborhood is the closest example of what the business center looked like in the 1800s.

Check-in was fast and very friendly. The room was quiet and clean. We went to the restaurant and had dinner; poutine, caprese sandwich (awesome fries) and wings were more than plenty for two people. The view was of a building under repair, we didn’t care. We were there for one frigid night after a Boston Pops Concert. We were warm comfortable in a clean room, can’t ask for much more than that

The room was a bit dingy and older, overall it was clean. What really made it nice was the staff . They were amazing and so kind. Everyone we interacted with was helpful and so sweet.

Not Worthy Of The Wyndham Name In short, I’ve stayed at nicer Motel 6s. This hotel is right next to Mass General Hospital, so you can imagine the demographic, and if you can’t- many people are there for their sick loved ones, many having surgery or life threatening issues. My wife had brain surgery the following day, so it was real convenient to find a hotel within walking distance to the hospital. The lobby looked like one of those you’d see on Gordan Ramsey’s hotel nightmare shows. Dark and dingy, with a very sketchy bar at the far end. The staff were pleasant. Especially the one who was patiently taking some verbal abuse by a rude customer demanding a refund. Now, I wonder, was the patience just practice, after getting the same complaints over and over? It was definitely foreshadowing. So we get to our room and it clearly has not been renovated since its inception. One of those where you’re afraid to use a black light and prefer to live in ignorance. It felt dirty. I’m not going to get into the decor. It would just seem petty to attack it like some queer eye for the straight guy episode. I will however mention the mold in the bathroom and possible steel wool stuffed in some holes in the bathroom…?… Moving on… My wife went to take a shower… and the shower backed up. Complete with other people’s hair. She was bathing in the filth of others (see attached photo of what floated up). Called the front desk, they did say they would send someone up that night… but again, surgery the following morning and we were headed to bed. We left it at someone will by tomorrow. Needless to say the next day it was still clogged. The second morning of my stay (two nights in) I called the front desk to ask if someone could come while I was at the hospital visiting my wife. When I returned that evening someone did come. However… the shower was not cleaned after it was unclogged. MOST of the hair was gone, but there were some flecks of molecules of something that washed down the drain when I turned on the shower. So I spent three nights there. And was not able to take a shower once. The Wyndham did not deliver on the services I paid for. The place was FAR below Wyndham standards and they should be ashamed. Business won’t be hurt - people need a place close to the hospital to stay. They know this, which is why the place has fallen into squalor. It had the vibe of a hotel where you pay by the hour. The staff were pleasant and polite - it is honestly not fair to them to have to field the numerous complaints and I ’m sure some belligerent customers. I received a refund for one night. While I am happy I received some sort of refund, it was not enough to compensate for the lack of services rendered that Wyndham advertised.

A Terrible Experience We stayed at Wyndham Boston Beacon Hill for 3 days starting May 14. This was the worst 3 hotel days I’ve ever experienced in my many years of travel. On out first day/night we were given a room facing major construction at Mass General Hospital across the street that continued until 6 PM. That construction was extremely loud with construction noise waking us at 6 AM. We had our reservation for 2 months and checked in the afternoon. We were never informed of the construction noise. Why would your staff knowingly book us into such an undesirable room with all that noise? It was terrible! In addition, that awful room had a mattress that was broken down on both sides so much so that I could feel the springs poking me in the rear end when I/Wife got in bed….ouch! All the rest of the furniture in the room looked like it came from a 2nd hand store. Badly scratched and chipped. The phone chargers in both bedside lamps did not work. The desk in the room did not have a complimentary pen. I had to borrow one from the front desk….how cheap is that! I’M NOT DONE YET! The shower DID NOT HAVE HOT WATER. We let it run cold for 15 minutes and then gave up. And by the way, all of your toilets when they flush sound like a water cannon explosion….so much for not waking up your partner in the middle of the night. The next day after arrival we were given a room change across the hall away from the construction noise. The good news was at least now the hot water worked and the furniture had fewer knicks and scratches. We still had toilets that had the water cannon explosion sound when flushed. THE BAD NEWS...both sides of this different bed were also broken down so I could feel the springs poking me when I got into bed….again ouch! Now to cap it all off we went to your vending machine to get bottled water. The vending machine was broken SO NO BOTTLED WATER. We chose a Wyndham hotel in Boston based upon our prior experiences. We didn’t pay a discounted rate. We were very disappointed with our Wyndham experience this time and feel as if we were cheated. If Wyndham believes that improving the corporate bottom line at the expense of customer’s creature comforts is an acceptable business practice we will rethink our future selection of hotel chains.

Not anymore The hotel is old and not very clean. The rooms smell strongly of cigarette smoke, and the windows can’t be opened, which makes the air quality even worse. Aside from Kit, the afternoon staff were unfriendly and seemed annoyed by basic requests. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel unless you have very low standards.
