Grand Rapids, Michigan: Scenic Riverwalk and Thriving Arts Scene

Four Great Lakes surround Michigan, so most places in the hand-shaped state aren’t very far from water, and this is certainly true of Grand Rapids. The state’s second-largest city, it sits about 30 minutes from Lake Michigan, and it takes its name from the free-flowing Grand River that cuts through town. The river helped put Grand Rapids on the map as a transportation center. Over the years, though, the city has reinvented itself; there’s now a livelier downtown area with gleaming office buildings, shopping boutiques, and a scenic river walk, all of which helped Grand Rapids top our list of the best US destinations in 2015.

The city has also worked to emphasize its arts and culture scene. The Grand Rapids Art Museum was relocated to a sleek, eco-friendly building in 2007. Inside, the museum has an extensive collection of 19th- and 20th-century paintings, sculptures, and furniture pieces. The Grand Rapids Public Museum is also well worth a visit; its exhibits include a re-creation of 1890s Grand Rapids and an early 20th-century carousel dubbed one of America’s Best by Travel + Leisure. The brilliantly painted carousel is one of only three of its style ever made. It sits within a glass building that juts out over a river.

Worst hotel I’ve stayed in There is no shuttle service and you’ll be laughed at by the front desk for asking about it. No breakfast either. People were smoking weed outside, there were homeless people living under the awning outside and the doors to the outside were unlocked at all hours. Black mold on the ceiling in the shower. A crusty piece of bread on the floor when we walked into our room. DO NOT STAY HERE.

Miserable. Dangerous. This property is trashed. There is little positive to say, outside of the empathy I have for the employees who must be overworked and forced to prop up a miserable hotel. The room advertised (2 bedroom suite) was only not available, it did not exist. The room I got was trashed, with destroyed cabinets, broken bedframes, etched graffiti in the bedposts and something smeared over most walls, and every surface was sticky. I asked (and got) a standard room, which was marginally better. Mice running through the walls, pets in the hallway, trash scattered throughout the hallway. STAY AWAY. STAY AWAY.

Filthy Filthy Filthy Most disgusting hotel we've seen in a long time. Filthy filthy filthy...other people's body hair left on the shower wall, all carpets filthy, the tv hadn't been dusted in months...years...No hair dryer in the room, called and told it would take 45 minutes to get one. NEVER AGAIN
