Downtown Pittsburgh: History and Culture in the Golden Triangle

Downtown Pittsburgh sits at the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers. Known as the Golden Triangle, this wedge of waterfront real estate is where the city's cultural, financial, and historic districts converge. Take a stroll through the area or navigate the more than 20 miles of bike trails to discover art galleries, historic buildings, and shiny skyscrapers home to corporate powerhouses such as United States Steel and PNC bank.

For a quick survey of the Steel City's roughly 260-year history, you can go on a walking tour from the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation. A short cab ride brings you to the city's Oakland neighborhood, where you'll find art and history museums as well as the Phipps Conservatory. This elaborate, Victorian-style greenhouse showcases 23 gardens, both in the steel-and-glass structure and on the grounds surrounding it.

Poor service We recently stayed three nights there while visiting CMU and Pitt. Location wise, this hotel is unbeatable and within walking distance to both CMU and Pitt. However, what prompted me to write this review is to share our bad experience with the house keeping service at this hotel. We found our room unserved when we returned for the day during evening hours on our second day there, even though I specifically requested to have our room served when we headed out during the day. I had to call to request fresh towels and the staff who answered the call had no trace of apology. Then on the third day, nobody had come when it was almost 5pm, so I texted and called the front desk to make sure there would indeed be house keeping service. We ended up having to wait in the lobby for the house keeping staff to do their job, even though we were tired out after spending a whole day out and about. Over the years I have witnessed the deterioration of services and amenities within the Marriott brand as a whole and in the hotel industry in general in the US. Amenities have now been cut to barebones, and now services are on the chopping block - every other day house keeping seems to have become the norm within Marriott unless guests request daily services. At least with the other Marriott hotels, daily services are provided upon request, but not at this one. This is really a new low - a hotel guest has to keep an eye on whether house keeping services would be provided!

Rebranded To Marriott Courtyard 6/25/24. Beautiful Renovation! Everything New! The Wyndham became a MARRIOTT COURTYARD on June 25, 2024. This entire hotel has been BEAUTIFULLY RENOVATED, and all smells brand new! A standard, modern corporate hotel. All the mattresses, linens, furniture, fixtures and carpeting are brand new! Mattress very comfortable, and fluffy pillows. The gym has new high-quality treadmills, ellipticals, medicine balls, weights etc. The air conditioner gave a steady comfortable, clean flow of air. This is a 5-Star property located near U of Pittsburgh. The 28X Airport Flyer bus stop is one block away. I had a King Deluxe room on the 6th floor with mini-refrigerator and sleep sofa. Coffee maker with decaf/regular coffee. Large bathroom with hairdryer. Plenty of wall outlets to charge electronics. Big screen TV. Black out curtains. AAA Discount. Parking is about $40, there is street parking. Kudos to the staff, especially Tanisha at the front desk, housekeeper Tekbir and Rod in maintenance. All very friendly. The front desk was attentive when I called to complain about a family down the hall that kept making noise going in and out of their rooms, kids running in the hall around midnight. A hotel employee came up and talked to the family, and again when they continued to make noise. The Cons - The new heavy room doors slam, and we could hear other guests’ room doors slamming. We could hear the supersonic sounding toilets flush in the rooms above, and other plumbing noises. This started at about 5:30 am when guests were getting up. The built-in shower toiletry bottles (shampoo, soap, conditioner) very hard to distinguish because the labels were so tiny and impossible to read (poor bottle design). I found the bathroom lighting too bright , at least it was bright. The table lamps with LED lights were harsh, not great light. The floor lamp gave a nice, soft light.

Nothing extra The rooms are small and have only the desk chair. There’s only a bar of soap, shampoo, conditioner and body wash in bottles in the shower. You won’t find any coffee in the lobby. One regular and one decaf packet for the room coffee. There was construction and no inside connection to a restaurant. No keycard for admittance if you go out the side door where there is above ground parking. Priced like a better hotel but gave you motel amenities.
