Hotel at a Glance: YD Guest Ranch

This historic ranch started out as a trading post in rural British Columbia, but for more than 70 years it’s been a dude ranch, welcoming guests to enjoy the tranquility of Thompson Country. The ranch specializes in horseback-riding excursions through fields and forests and offers faster-paced ATV and Argo tours of the landscape. At night, guests retire to tipis, Cliff Houses, the deluxe treehouse, or a rustic cabin to snuggle up under down duvets.

  • Luxury tipis are handmade by Native Canadians using high-density, water-resistant canvas. They’re set in the pines and especially popular with kids.
  • Cliff Houses offer a classic glamping experience, with elevated floors blanketed with eye-catching area rugs. Each one has a propane stove and a small porch.
  • The deluxe treehouse is a brand-new addition to the ranch. It stands 15 feet above the forest floor, surrounded by pine trees for extra seclusion.
  • The rustic cabin dates back to the 1940s and was recently renovated.

Ashcroft, British Columbia: Rural Town in Thompson Country

With its abundance of bald eagles, bighorn sheep, and black bears, Ashcroft may be a place where animals outnumber people. The town of about 1,600 is located in Thompson Country, a piece of the British Columbian interior. It’s inhabited largely by the Secwepemc people; you can learn more about their way of life at the Secwepemc Museum and Heritage Park, located on the banks of the South Thompson River about an hour’s drive from Ashcroft. The park features four reconstructed winter pit houses, as well as a re-creation of a summer village.
