Yerington, Nevada: Hiking Trails and Family-Friendly Recreation
When John Denver sang about the tiny town of Yerington in his 1972 song “Darcy Farrow,” he painted a picture of a peaceful mountain town steeped in romance: “Her eyes shone bright like the pretty lights / that shine in the night out of Yerington Town.” The simile still holds up. As you cruise into Yerington, old-fashioned streetlights and storefronts emit a warm glow that welcomes you back from a day of hiking the area’s mountain trails.
The most famous of these hiking spots is the 7-mile Bluestone Mine Trail. Its rocky terrain makes for an exhilarating hike, but you can also rent a four-wheeler and charge through a rugged canyon along the trail. If you drive about an hour south, you’ll reach Pine Grove Ghost Town, which is surrounded by even more off-roading and mountain-biking trails.
Downtown Yerington still retains much of its 19th-century charm. The streets are lined with red-brick storefronts and a historic school and courthouse. In the evening, you can sit down to dinner at a mom-and-pop restaurant or sip spirits at a local saloon. There’s also a pair of casinos in town. Pioneer Crossing Casino is right across the street from Yerington Inn, and the family-owned Dini’s Lucky Club—in business since the 1930s—is on the same block.
