Oakhurst, California: Gateway to Year-Round Adventure at Yosemite National Park

Less than 50 miles northeast of Fresno, the town of Oakhurst is a gateway to the southern portion of Yosemite National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site that welcomes millions of visitors every year. Thanks to low elevations, much of the Yosemite Valley remains accessible to drivers, hikers, and snowball poachers throughout the winter.

Crowds at Yosemite are much smaller in the cooler months, meaning you can explore the park at an unhurried pace and experience it as few visitors can. Snowshoe along uncrowded trails in winter, or go downhill or cross-country skiing. Spring is one of the best times to see the famed waterfalls, thanks to the snowmelt brought on by warmer weather. Yosemite Falls—a three-tiered waterfall considered the highest in North America—transforms into thundering cataracts each spring. Serious hikers can trek to the top on the strenuous Upper Yosemite Falls trail, which gains 2,700 feet in elevation in just 3.5 miles.

Though much of the park is covered in snow through May, winter and spring have their perks. Stroll the 5-mile loop around Mirror Lake, a meadow in summer, fall, and winter. In the spring, it’s full of water reflecting one of the park’s most iconic geologic formations, the granite Half Dome.

Nice room, terrible service Room was nice and comfortable. Convenient parking. There was false advertising: the reservation included breakfast but the hotel did not have breakfast available. This should have been stated under the reservation. The hotel staff was not friendly and it was like they were doing a favor to me. Room was not cleaned, no new towels or toiletries were provided in 3 nights stay. When there was a check out time, there was nobody in the office. I had to look and yell to get someone. When a person finally came, she had big rubber gloves on her and she just waved her hand at me. I had to specifically ask for a receipt. So to summarize: nice room, terrible service. I will not be booking this hotel again when I come to Oakhurst.

Perfect Yosemite vibe We visited here in the off season. The inn was not very crowded and there was not much staff around, but we were treated as well as if the entire crew were there. Our room was large, clean, and comfortable. Breakfast was plentiful and quite good. Travel to Yosemite is easy, and gives chance for a quick stop at the Redwood Grove on the way. The town of Oakhurst is nice too.

It was alright, not horrible We had asked the lady at the front desk if there was an elevator to go to the second floor. She said yes and told us where to walk. When we went to the location she told us to, we ended up at a door that led to the building and then there were stairs. We had a stroller for the baby and we ended up having to carry all our stuff up the stairs and in two or three trips. Not fun. In the morning there was a very loud noise that sounded like someone drilling something. Although we were awake and getting ready for the day, the sound was annoying. The continental breakfast was reasonable. Something to put in our stomach and not be hungry while we got ready for the day. The room was clean and I liked the flooring in the room which appeared to look like a laminate wood maybe.
