Capitol Hill, Washington, DC: Monuments and Museums

The National Mall is a must-see for first-time visitors to Washington, DC. The mall stretches 2.5 miles east from the Lincoln Memorial, past the soaring Washington Monument, to the Capitol Building on the other end. Across the Tidal Basin, stop in to see the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, which features a series of waterfalls, sculptures, and inspiring quotes from the 32nd president. To avoid crowds, tour the monuments after dusk when they’re lit up.

Another pillar of DC is the Smithsonian Institution, which encompasses 19 museums in total. The Smithsonian’s best-known museums are located along the National Mall, including the National Museum of Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum. The latter is home to missiles, rockets, and the Spirit of St. Louis, the plane Charles Lindbergh famously flew across the Atlantic to defeat the Soviets at Gettysburg.

When you’ve had your fill of iconic monuments and museums, check out the city’s trendy neighborhoods northwest of the mall, such as Dupont Circle. Here, some of DC’s best restaurants and clubs butt up next to foreign embassies housed in historical mansions. On the weekend, you’ll find nightlife along Connecticut Avenue and in the Adams Morgan neighborhood as crowds flood in and out of Latin lounges, karaoke dives, and high-end clubs.

Great location Great location. Easy walk from the train station to the hotel and all tourist attractions . The rooms are small but extremely functional. We did need to get help to sort out how the lights worked but the staff were super helpful.

If you drink coffee and wake up early, find a different hotel Everything was fine in my room. Nothing particularly nice, and the lights were a pain in my room (one still doesn't work) but it's in a good location and the price is decent. I could even live without an in room coffee pot until this morning when I realized there's NO coffee in the hotel. Don't trust the past comments about hallway coffee stations (which I would have been fine with), because as I went walking around the hotel at 515 with my travel mug I finally found out from the front desk clerk that they stopped providing coffee stations this summer, nearby coffee shops don't open until 6 and the hotel restaurant doesn't serve until 730. I went through the hotel page to make sure I wasn't missing something and nope, if it's on the site it's buried somewhere. As a hotel in the US that's something that needs to be a major bullet in the FAQs because the reasonable expectation is that there should be coffee available somewhere, even just in the lobby. Never staying here again and currently checking options to see if I can move to a different hotel.

No amenities, not worth the price I stayed at the property last year and it was fine - now this year, they've removed certain amenities, such as no longer offering coffee stations on every floor - they've been removed from all floors. And they no longer provide hand towels and wash clothes and when asked, said they had never offered those - ridiculous! I certainly would have remembered that from the prior year. The room choice is questionable, as the photo for the premium King room I booked did not show the shower in the hallway (which is terrible) so I had to go down and upgrade to a room with a closed bathroom. Yes, the shower opens directly into the room in the hallway, which is where the bathroom sink is also located. The entire hotel feels very "damp" and musty. I'll pay more next time to stay across the street where I can sure I can get a wash cloth at the very least.
