Freestanding Cottages Along Belizean Atoll
Of the three atolls off Belize's coast, Turneffe Atoll has the most biologically diverse coral reefs, thanks to the mangrove-speckled islands acting as nurseries for tropical fish, manatees, and dolphins. Located on an island within Turneffe Atoll, Blackbird Caye Resort presides over a 2-mile private beach nestled among coconut trees and 1,300 acres of jungle. Walk down two whitewashed docks that extend into the Caribbean Sea, where you might spot bonefish, barracuda, stingrays, and nurse sharks.
With ocean temperatures hovering around 82 degrees, scuba diving and snorkeling are undoubtedly Turneffe Atoll's main attraction. More than 70 dive and snorkel sites are a 15-minute boat ride from Blackbird. Explore shallow reefs on snorkel trips, which take you among the coral, sea fans, and brightly colored fish. You can also rent sea kayaks ($30 per day) to navigate through mangrove-laden lagoons and spot resident dolphins playing a game of Marco Polo.
After a day exploring the deep blue sea, guests retire to private beachfront cottages covered with thatched roofs. Standard, superior, and deluxe cabanas come with air conditioning and private porches with hammocks. If you rent the entire island, your party of up to 36 will spread out across the island’s five standard cabanas, five superior cabanas, three deluxe cabanas, and four triplex or duplex cabanas. Each day, the palapa-style restaurant at the main dock serves three meals of fresh island cuisine. Dinner is a sit-down affair with your choice of meat, chicken, or fish plus a house-made dessert.
The scuba-diving package, included with the full island rental, consists of two single-tank morning dives and one single-tank afternoon dive daily. It also includes trips out to the Half Moon Caye and Blue Hole, the dark-blue sinkhole Jacques Cousteau reportedly named one of the world's top 10 scuba-diving sites.
Turneffe Atoll, Belize: World-Class Scuba Diving and Snorkeling
Located about 25 miles off the coast of Belize City, Blackbird Caye Resort is only a short boat ride from the Blue Hole, one of Belize's most iconic natural landmarks. In the middle of a coral reef, a 400-foot-deep limestone sinkhole forms a nearly perfect circle in a brilliant shade of navy blue. As divers descend into the hole, they see limestone stalactites and stalagmites hanging off the walls.
Half Moon Caye Natural Monument is home to some of Belize's most exotic land animals and a motley bunch of underwater creatures. Rare red-footed boobies nest on the caye for about 10 months, then spend the other two months playing shuffleboard in Naples.
