My sisters and I decided to return to Nepal after having been there more than 30 years ago in childhood. Initially only two of us planned to go and then my other sister decided to join. Tara at Bohemian Tours was able to get us all together on the same trip and even rooming together in a triple in a couple of the locations. The actual trek was beautiful. We spent about 4 days going up and down, usually a lot of up and then a lot of down, with occasional "Nepali flat" in between. It was exactly what I was looking for: a complete disconnect from my California life and a chance to physically exert myself in a truly impressive landscape. I will admit, by the 5th day, when we were bringing our trip to a close, my legs had little left to give. Another way of putting this was that the length of trip was just right! All accommodation (guesthouses and ecohotels) was pre-planned and most of the places we stayed at were decent. I could have had more time in Kathmandu, though we didn't leave any extra time after the trip to explore, unfortunately. I would recommend this to people looking for a short trekking experience who are in mildly decent shape and have a good attitude! We loved it!

March 16–18: Arrival in Delhi and Agra

On day 1, a tour representative will meet you at the Delhi airport and escort you to your hotel. The next day, you’ll travel four hours to Agra, home of India’s best-known landmark, the Taj Mahal. At dusk, you can watch the setting sun cast warm hues on the Yamuna river.

  • Taj Mahal: Some lovers send flowers; some write love songs. Shah Jahan built his late wife this stunning white marble palace, which is decked out with deep-blue lapis lazuli and agate on the inside.
  • Agra Fort: This 16th-century fortress fended off attack with its imposing red sandstone walls, battlements, and moat.

March 18–19: Jaipur

A five-hour drive takes you to Jaipur, where you’ll spend 2 days taking in the sights in India’s Pink City. Stops include the City Palace, where landscaped gardens and palace buildings depict opulent Mughal and Rajasthan architecture.

  • Amer Fort: This intricate marble and sandstone fortress contains a dazzling hall filled with mirrors and stone carvings. You can ride an elephant to the fort (fees apply).
  • Hawa Mahal: Nearly a thousand windows and dozens of balconies are carved into the façade of this palace, which was inspired by one of Krishna’s crowns.

March 20–22: Udaipur

You’ll hop back on the bus for a seven-hour ride to Udaipur. The landscape here is dominated by mountain ranges and placid lakes—a romantic setting that’s earned Udaipur the nickname “Venice of the East.” In Ranakpur, you’ll see a temple adorned with more than 1,400 pillars.

  • City Palace and Museum sits on the edge of Lake Pichola. Its granite terraces and marble arches meld medieval and Chinese architecture.
  • Jagdish Temple: Carved statues of elephants and dancers adorn the main spire of this three-story temple built to honor Vishnu.

March 23–25: Pushkar

Pushkar is considered sacred to Hindus, who make the pilgrimage here to bathe in the waters of Pushkar Lake. After the six-hour drive from Udaipur, you’ll have leisure time to explore the setting at your own pace.

  • Holi festival: Toss colorful powders at passersby and wish everyone a happy Holi—“Bura na mano, Holi hai!”—during the annual celebration.
  • See the sunset over Pushkar Lake. Legend holds that the lake was formed from a lotus blossom dropped by Brahma.
  • Browse the bazaars: Roadside stalls are hung with colorful silks and statues of Hindu deities.

March 26: Delhi

The tour comes to a close with a visit to one of the biggest metropolises in the world, Delhi, which you’ll reach by evening train on day 10. On day 11, a half-day tour spotlights the presidential building and the India Gate, which resembles Paris’s Arc de Triomphe.

  • Lodi Gardens: 90 acres of fountains, lakes, and rose gardens dating back to the 15th century
  • Humayun’s Tomb: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this 16th-century domed tomb was essential to the evolution of Mughal architecture.
