Days 1–3: Arrival in Delhi and Agra
On Day 1, a tour representative will meet you at Delhi Airport and escort you to your hotel. The next day, you’ll visit a local school on your way to Agra, home of India’s best-known landmark, the Taj Mahal. (The drive takes about 4 hours.) At dusk, you can watch the setting sun cast warm hues on the Yamuna River.
- Taj Mahal: Some lovers send flowers; some write love songs. Shah Jahan built his late wife this stunning whitemarble palace, which is decked out with deep-blue lapis lazuli and agate on the inside.
- Agra Fort: This 16th-century fortress fended off attack with its imposing red-sandstone walls, battlements, and moat.
Days 4–5: Jaipur
A 5-hour drive takes you to Jaipur, where you’ll spend 2 days taking in the sights in India’s Pink City. Stops include the City Palace, where landscaped gardens and palace buildings depict opulent Mughal and Rajasthan architecture. It’s here that you’ll watch fireworks explode overhead to celebrate the Diwali Festival of Lights.
- Amer Fort: This intricate marble-and-sandstone fortress contains a dazzling hall filled with mirrors and stone carvings. You can ride an elephant to the fort (fees apply).
- Hawa Mahal: Nearly a thousand windows and dozens of balconies are carved into the facade of this Palace of the Winds, which was inspired by one of Lord Krishna’s crowns.
Days 6–8: Udaipur
You’ll hop back on the bus for a 7-hour ride to Udaipur. The landscape here is dominated by mountain ranges and placid lakes—a romantic setting that’s earned Udaipur the nickname “Venice of the East.” In Ranakpur, you’ll see a temple adorned with more than 1,400 pillars.
- City Palace and Museum sits on the edge of Pichola Lake. Its granite terraces and marble arches meld medieval and Chinese architecture.
- Jagdish Temple: Carved statues of elephants and dancers adorn the main spire of this three-story temple built to honor Lord Vishnu.
Days 9–10: Pushkar
Pushkar is considered sacred to Hindus, who make the pilgrimage here to bathe in the waters of Pushkar Lake. After the 6-hour drive from Udaipur, you’ll have plenty of leisure time to explore the setting at your own pace.
- See the sun set over Pushkar Lake. Legend holds that the lake was formed from a lotus blossom dropped by Lord Brahma.
- Browse the bazaars: Roadside stalls are hung with colorful silks and statues of Hindu deities.
Day 11: Delhi
The tour comes to a close with a visit to one of the biggest metropolises in the world, Delhi, which you’ll reach by evening train on Day 10. On the last day, a half-day tour spotlights the Presidential building and the India Gate, which resembles Paris’s Arc de Triomphe.
- Lodi Gardens: 90 acres of fountains, lakes, and rose gardens that date back to the 15th century
- Humayun’s Tomb: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this 16th-century domed tomb was essential to the evolution of Mughal architecture.
