Hotel at a Glance: Four-Star The Britt Scripps Inn

Located on historic Bankers Hill, The Britt Scripps Inn is an intimate, award-winning Victorian house-turned-hotel that overlooks downtown San Diego. Antiques and period furnishings decorate this romantic three-story hotel, and a full American breakfast is served every morning.

  • Historical architecture: The Britt Scripps Inn is a well-preserved example of the Queen Anne Victorian movement, with its elaborate turrets and gables and hand-carved woodwork. Inside, there’s an original two-story stained-glass window wall and claw-foot bathtubs, along with antique rugs.
  • A room with style: Rooms at the inn are styled with a posh, lavish, or classic decor theme, and this deal is valid for a stay in any one of them. For true privacy, check out the carriage house, a small Victorian cottage a few steps away from the main house. It’s decorated with vintage furniture and has a two-person whirlpool tub.
  • Walking distance from: San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter, Balboa Park, and the San Diego Zoo.
  • Kick back and relax: The inn features a giant wraparound porch where you can take your coffee and lounge in the sun. The landscaped grounds are perfect for strolling.
  • Dig in: The menu for the full American breakfast changes daily and includes items such as croissant french toast, blueberry-white-chocolate scones, and artichoke-and-pesto cheese omelets. In the afternoons, wine and hors d’oeuvres are served to guests.

San Diego, California: Historical Attractions and Electric Nightlife in Southern California

San Diego's sunny, comfortably warm weather and 70 miles of coastline have long attracted vacationing out-of-towners, but the city's inland scene is no slouch, either. The Gaslamp Quarter is arguably one of the trendiest listings on the National Register of Historic Places. The area forms both the historic center of town and a hub of San Diego nightlife, with nearly 100 Victorian-era buildings now occupied by high-end boutiques, jewelers, and gourmet restaurants.

During the day, a stroll through iconic Balboa Park takes you past 17 separate museums, as well as the world-famous and much beloved San Diego Zoo. There's also the vibrant Spanish Village Art Center, a living gallery where local artists continuously produce pottery, handblown glass, and oil paintings for sale.

Farther north, in Old Town—site of the first European settlement in California—shops in Mission-style stucco buildings sell colorful wrestling masks, woven baskets, and maracas. Nearby stands The Whaley House Museum, dubbed one of the Most Terrifying Places in America by the Travel Channel. Ghosts of former residents are said to inhabit the rooms, which are filled with Victorian furniture, eerie dolls, and squeegees for ectoplasm cleanup.

Customer Reviews

We enjoyed every part of our visit from the beauty of the inn to the picnic and bike ride to the wine and cheese with other guests. The staff was incredibly kind and friendly. We had great conversations with everyone of them from the young man who greeted and registered us to the chef who supplied us with our picnic lunch to the wonderful woman who took care of our room. They shared the history of the inn, asked about what we might need, and personalized our care. We had a fabulous time.

The ambiance was lovely.

Breakfast--included--is AMAZING. Definitely an unusual value: gourmet breakfast included. The room was beautiful, ornate, with attention paid to small details that captured the proposed theme (Gothic). We had a package that included a picnic (the lunch was provided by Britt Scripps, another delicious meal courtesy of their fantastic chef) and bicycle ride through the neighboring Balboa Park-- the bikes are refurbished Pashleys, absolutely lovely. The area is quiet and as romantic or relaxing as you could want. The wine-and-cheese hour is a nice touch, and all the staff members are friendly and eager to make your stay worthwhile. I highly recommend this Groupon--superb value!
